 I was on my way home tonight when i heard a thump and lost all drive.
I pulled over and looked underneath but couldnt see anything as it was dark so i jumped back in and tried again.
I found that i didnt have drive in normal hi but did have drive in hi and low with difflock and low without.Luckily i wasnt far from home so i managed to limp home.

On the drive i tried Hi without the difflock again and found it working so I reversed out off the drive again and the same thing happened(thump and then no drive).I could hear a rattling/grinding/vibrating sound as though the transfer box wasnt engaging correctly.

Also the handbreak isnt working if i leave it in hi normal.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where the problem may be?

Im guessing at some kind off selector problem but I really dont know much about the transmission.

Thanks

might be wrong on this some of the other lad might give you a better clue but i would say it might be the rear diff if the hand brake is not working like i say might be wrong hope this helps

Initialy i would agree with you, the ransfer box but then you talk about the hand break. The hand break is affective on the rear prop so by the fact that this does not work I would assiume that there is no connection between the prop and rear wheels or at least one of them.

I had similer simtoms where I had clunking and then no drive but in diff lock I could drive. This turned out to be one of the front CV joints.

The way to see what is happening is,asuming there is no drive, (Be care full this can be dangerous!!) get some one to put it in gear and try to drive as you look underneath. one of the props may be spinning round, this is because the power is going to the place of least resistance if there is no turning I then gues it may be th transfer box or further on.

So if it is the rear then it could be the diff or a half shaft??

Hope this helps.

this is definately a rear diffy area problem,if your handbrake was working then it would suggest transfer box but your handbrake is connected on the rear brive, like the others said. it will be either the cv joint shot or the diff itself or even a snapped halfshaft. like yer man says, the transmission finds the weakest point to give out its lateral energy so this is why you have drive with the diff lock engaged, i hope this helps :)

Thanks very much guys.
I "phoned a friend" and he advised me to jack up a rear wheel and see if it still turned with the car in gear.
I did and the wheel turned freely so my friend seems to think i have broken a halfshaft.
I just dropped the oil from the diff and although it was very dirty i couldnt see any metal which also is good news.

How difficult is a halfshaft to replace?
Also do you replace both rears at the same time or could i just do the one??
Thanks again.

Find out which halfshaft has broken, by ondoing the bolts around the cap in the middle of the wheel. Pull it out. You'll soon see if it is broken or not. Just replace the one. However, if the half shaft has broken within 6 inches of the cap, shine a torch up the tube to make sure it hasn't damaged the inner oil seal. Good luck

if its the half shaft wich has broken, and it sounds as it has. 9 times outa 10 its broken in the diff, wich means its gona have to come out as theres no other way of getting the broken bit out(dont worry, this isent as bad as it sounds)
you dont want bits of broken half shaft jamming up yer dif. also have a good look at the ring and pinion for damage while your there.

heres a excellent link to a step by step on replacing a broken half shaft.

This morning i pulled out the half shafts and both were fine.
Next off was the diff which when i looked had shed all its internal gubbins into the diff housing.

I think ive been quite lucky not to break the diff housing.

So a new diff was bought this afternoon and will be fitted tommorow leaving me £300 lighter but also with a feeling that ive managed to do something that i wouldnt have atempted to without the help and info that people in the forum have given me.

Thanks a lot guys.
