So,

Going to do a gearbox oil service on my 2000 plate THOR engined 4.0 Auto.

Conflicting reports on quantity required. I have read a few threads on here that seem to suggest 5L would be enough, however I have also read 9.7L is required. Any suggestions on which one is accurate?

Was going to use this oil : TRIPLE QX Land Rover ATF Dexron III 5 Litre | Euro Car Parts UK?s No.1 Car Parts Retailer

Unless anyone has a better suggestion?

And the service kits that I see floating about, are any better than others? Or will they all be much the same? Where would be best to buy? I was just gonna get a kit of ebay for a tenner, but if there is a better alternative, I'm all ears.

Also, do I need to use some sort of handpump to refill? Any suggestions here would also be most welcome.

I'm only planning on keeping the motor for a year or so, so don't want to spend huge amounts on it, but then I'd rather spend a little more on quality parts as it may help when selling it. Or at least keep my from having to do it all again in a few months time. But don't really fancy spending triple on the oil if I can help it.

You won't get more than 5 litres out or back in. 4.7 litres is retained in cooler and torque convertor. See RAVE for details, no dip stick on your car so it's all done from below. Do the filter and fluid change then run for a couple of weeks and change fluid again. The fluid you are buying is a little on the pricey side but then again i get mine trade. You should be able to get 5 litres of the correct spec for less than £20.00 if you look around even retail.

I use a garden pump sprayer with the nozzle cut off to re-fill. make sure you follow the correct fill procedure, engine & box cold, fill until oil runs out, start engine and run through the gears and back to N or P and continue filling with the engine idling until it runs out, replace plug and stop engine.

Yes if you want to get as near as you can to a complete change. Stick a bottle of Lucas in it as well on second change.

Not one of those anywhere near me, and I fear the £5 delivery cost will ruin it. So might as well go for the better one linked by wammers.

Not so bothered about getting so close to a complete change. I wasn't sure if I wanted to even go this far with the servicing, considering I only plan on keeping it for a year or there abouts. But I'd be kicking myself for not changing it if something did happen.

What is this Lucas you mention though? And is it worth putting in on the first (and only) go? Link?
 
I found the oil ****es out of the top round the piston rod those syringes, garden sprayer is much better, 5 litres in the container and pump it up, press the trigger and off you go with fine control of shut off. :)

It's a good idea as most people do when purchasing there Rangie is to do just a standard oil change, remove filler plug first as these can be a pain in the arse to remove if seized, drain oil, drop sump, change filter, pop in some Lucas , then top with correct oil , for what it costs it far out weighs any problems further down the road and also for peace of mind. Changed mine when I got my Rangie 2 years ago and the changes are still seamless .
 
Well, that link was from the US, so was right expensive. But got some ordered in the UK anyway.

Hopefully it will all arrive for the weekend and I can get to it.

Had a look through the masses of paperwork that came with the motor, and there is no evidence of there having been an oil change since 2011 :wtf:

That being said, it has only done about 8,000 miles since then, of which 6,000 of them were done in the first 2 years of that spell. So hopefully not too bad.

I have the engine oil and filter and spark plugs here for the engine service anyway, so might try to get that done before the end of the week anyway. I aint really driving it until I get the brakes done regardless, so should be good once I have done all this servicing.

All this work on a motor I'm only planning on keeping a year. I now regret being so tight with the other one I looked at. It was better condition, lower miles, not quite as many extras mind, but by the time I have bought all this service stuff, would have been cheaper anyway. I made the decision before I got home from viewing it that I wanted it, but that was too late. It was gone before I got home. :censored:
 
I use an old stirrup pump. Cleaned it out, ran some oil through it, and now it is designated for oils and fluids. Works really well.
Do put some Lucas transmission fix in it - well worth it. Best way is to mix it up with the fluid, you'll never pump it otherwise.
I got filter change kit from Craddocks.
When you are filling it, cable tie the nozzle of the fill pump pipe in place then you can do all the filling, gear changing etc and only have to go back under to put the plug back in. You have to do this while it is still running. Good luck
 
Right, got the oil and filter kit through, just waiting on the pump and Lucas stuff now. Hopefully tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up guys. Much appreciated.

Bought that pump, and it fell apart on the first use. Well, 3rd pump to be fair. Now peeing transmission fluid everywhere.

This service has been a right f****** nightmare. Sheared bolt heads, 2 days messing about trying to get them off. Snapped replacements bolts, new replacement bolts, now, finally at the last hurdle, and the pump breaks...

I am getting really fed up of this now. Got to go to B&Q now to find something, no doubt extortionately priced, to do this final stage as I don't have any more time now to get everything done...

What fell off it? Fairly robust piece of kit, at least the one i got is.
 
Nothing fell off. It just started peeing transmission fluid out the joins. Like at the bottom, where the end cap is with the in and out ports, and then through the lever when pumping.

So it didn't fall apart then just leaked a bit. :D:D

Hate to say I told you to use a garden sprayer, cheaper and more effective:p:):)
