As above, pre-empt repairs and spend lots of time underneath. Peel back steering knuckle ball joint boots and check things are hunky-dory inside etc, cos theyre a pig to change but easy to maintain. Undo the bolts, beat the knuckle off the tapers, peel the boots and grease up, then work the balls to check they are nice and free.
All these things help save you that catastrophic failure or the big repair bill
