I am having difficulties getting my transfer case from Hi to low, eventually goes in with"not nice noise" but will jump out into neutral for a short time before settling down, then fine. When I want to go back to Hi it takes a lot of effort, but doesn't jump out once in.
Engine is V8i ZF auto box and defender 1.4 ratio LT230 transfer box. Tried in P, N & D
Appreciate any guidance. Thanks

Make sure that you're shifting it correctly.

You need to be moving slowly, preferably in a straight line, main stick in neutral, then change the range.
hopefully that should sort it, but if it doesn't, then it sounds like your linkage has a problem.

if it's still giving problems, then you need to check the linkage. There is a *bent metal* connector on the linkage, this is made to fail if abused, and it's a right sod of a job to change.
There are small plastic bushes in the eyelet ends, and the clip on the pin is a bugger to put back on. you need to tackle it from underneath and on top as well. I finished up cutting a hole in the tunnel side & making a hinged trapdoor.

Check out the drawing on this thread. file:///D:/Landrover/Diff%20lock%20sector%20and%20linkage%20-%20LR4x4%20-%20The%20Land%20Rover%20Forum_files/post-20087-12723574745_thumb.jpg

item No3 is the bracket that bends, items No2 are the fiddly little plastic bushes, and item No5 is the clip on the pin.
