my transfer box on my defender went last week

:( so i went to a local landrover spot n he has a disco transfer box which ive heard is the better option for £250 so while that and the gearbox is down i may as well do the clutch thats £80 and to do all the work hes qouted me £738 inc vat would you guys say thats a fair price or should i look elsewere?

i could do the work as im a agricultural mechanic but we dont have a ramp at our workshop and i havnt use of any.

any help would be great :)

thanks nick

From Yorkshire... and happy to spend money on things you could do yourself????!!!!!!!!! Shocked!
Transfer box for about £100 on ebay (or same price from me! :p)

look elsewhere.
some transfer boxes will be as little as £100 and if you can do the work yourself your probably better off trying to find a ramp to rent on a sunday and crack on with it.

need a ramp mate as they come out the bottom !!!
so more hight the better
as for clutch and t/box you can do all when box out as i did and i got it done for 300 the other week so with the t/box about right vat a killer mate
look round for the best deal on a t/box

Put the motor up on four car ramps or milk crates - more than enough room.
Transfer box comes off without removing the gearbox.
Do it yourself and spend what you save on beer tokens.

yeah i dont have th time atm as its havest n all so thats why i went to a garage
i think he said it was £615 inc vat so £738 then i know its done proberly as it would be my first but im sure its easy its only spanner work so,

beneagles - what condition is the box you have in?

also shifty clutch is abit dodgy so going to do that and check output shaft ;)

anybody around pocklington have a ramp to rent/borrow?

Do the lot whilst you can. The t/box does seem a touch pricey, ask him how much to put one on that you supply.

im going to do it myself now ive found a ramp :D

so i should save some dollar :beer2:

has anybody got a decent t/box for sale??

ill keep you all posted how it all goes and post some pics if i remember :)

Also beware that some transfer boxes have been welded to the gearbox as a cheap fix when the splines on the output shaft wear.

This will prevent them from coming apart and will mean a new gearbox as well

dont worry about puting landy up on ramps to change tranny, tis easy to do as it stands as their is enough room to pull it out from underneath once out, also means you dont have to lift new one that much higher to refit as it can be awkward as weight wise it is off balance, just make sure you chock the wheel as you will have no handbrake to stop it moving
