Head's a shed
So the situation is as follows.

I've put a 6bt in my 90, Which is a low reving diesel engine.

I currently have a 28D 1.2 transfer box on.

However I've been talking to a few others about the conversion and have decided I need a 1.003 transfer box.

Now having been looking on and off for a while for one they seem pretty non existent.

Which leads me to thinking it's possibly going to be easier to just change the ratio.

Now I have seen you can buy a complete gear set for about £270
But have also seen you can just buy the high gear

My other problem is the input gear is part of my adapter to join the gearbox/transfer box together.
So would this need changing due to different amount of teeth?

I've been trying to make sense of it and my head is now mashed
So what I could do with knowing is what is interchangeable and what isn't to make it into a 1.003 transfer box.

I think you will be surprised just how high the cummins will rev
Oldest truck we used to look after was a 97 R reg daf 45 and that had no limiter fitted, was good for over 70mph and revved like the clappers!
It had a heavy steel tipper body fitted, company went bust late last year.

Yeah, it'll need a higher rpm governor spring. 3500rpm probably as they're cheap.

But still recon 1.003 transfer box will make it a hell of a lot better.
Found out that changing from
1.222 > 1.003 is a 21.80% Raise

Well just been and checked, It is 28 tooth.
Thought it was but wanted to make sure :)
Suffix E.

all the 1.003 boxes ive come across are early boxes which use frc5428 26 tooth input gears ,to convert an e suffix to early box would require all gears changing and center diff

Ah, Right, So the amount of parts will make it expensive?

I'd just buy a complete box if I could actually find one :(

Just bung it together as it is for now. I'm dying to see what it's like finished. My experience is that your rate of progress is not limited by the gearing or power of the Land Rover, but by the presence of other traffic (and speed limits). You might be pleasantly surprised by how well it goes. Think of the 1.003 upgrade as a long term project.

True, And a long term project is probably better and hopefully find a second hand one.

But from what I've been told I'll need it. Or big tyres. Or both if you're greedy :p

But we'll see what happens.

I maywell be taking my 1.003:1 tranny box out as im going back to normal ratios. I know of another locally for £240 second hand but I have no other info on it. Seems they are fetching a premium these days

I'd say not so much fetching a premium but more just none about.
Last couple I saw on ebay went for £100-110
My concern is it's not just a transfer box.
It's part of my adapter, Which I'll have to have made up again.
plus collecting it.
So not sure which way to go now.

Nope, This, Which allows me to use the wagon gearbox that came with my engine.
Basically a prop flange turned down and welded to the input gear.

Diffs are something else I've seen. Although I'd kind of dismissed it.
But having looked at them they seem to make a bigger difference than I thought they would.
Just trying to weigh up all the options for the best results.
But I can't make a decision.

Id say somehow get 1/1 transfer is your best option, gives you options with diffs and tyre sizes later. If you can convert to keep your current adapter shaft that would be ideal tjen youve basically got a rebuilt transfer box and dont have to get a new shaft made

Yep, Transfer box is where I wanted to start to be honest.
But James said all the 1.003 transfer boxes he has seen have been 26 tooth input. Mine being 28 I'd need the adapter knocking up again.
Not really the end of the world, I just haven't got that sort of money at the mo.

Oh and I'd be stuck with a useless (to me) gear.
Would also need another prop flange from some where.
More thinking needed
