Afternoon all,

I spent a good deal of yesterday underneath my Series II changing diff and gearbox oils – first time I’ve done it and some of the plugs were not keen on being moved, but for the most part all went ok. The one though that was a real challenge was the transfer box filler plug – it has pretty much been rounded off (some time ago by the look of it) and I can’t get it to budge – fortunately I remembered the old tip about not draining the old oil out before removing the filler plug, in case you found you couldn’t put any new oil in!

Anyway, I’m resigned to seeking professional help to get in there, but before I do wanted to make sure I had a new plug ready to go. So your advice please… is this what I need, once I have got the old one out?

If not, what do I need, and does anyone out there breaking a landy have one in good nick they’d like to sell / pass on?

Thanks for reading, hope someone can help!

It's what's in the parts book - same number for transfer box and main g'box filler plug.

You can take the top plate off the transfer box and pour a measured amount in there - it's what I used to do. Just make sure you don't over fill it. Just remove middle front seat to get access.

I've now got a Roamerdrive which replaces the filler plug with a dip-stick and has a filler in the top plate which is easier though reading the dip-stick is not so easy with new clean oil. You might be able to buy they top-plate and dip-stick from Rockymountain spares?

seems right to me.

to remove it, I'd wirebrush around it then squirt some penetrating fluid/plusgas and have another go. If no joy (and before you remove the oil) go for a decent drive to warm it all up a bit, then try again.

If it's really rounded off, then some grips or whack on a slightly smaller socket (probably one you don't care about smashing). Only thing i'd be wary about is harming the threads.

Thanks for all the advice; I'll follow Trax's tip to get the old one out, once I've got a nice new shiny one to go in!

Just a bit of feedback following everyones' advice; I popped a bit of oil in through the top plate as Dominic said (to make sure there was some in there!), went for a bit of a spin, then following Trax's tip of an old socket managed to get the old plug out. Nice new one (part no 3292) now in, along with new oil, so all sorted. Thanks for your help, everyone.
