Hi there new to this have a problam with my range rover p38 auto, when i put it in to low nothing happens its just like when it is in high no light comes on on dash or at the gear shift area can any body help on this one

Firstly check that you are following the correct procedure for transferring into low ratio. Mine is manual, so I can't comment on the procedure for auto. The procedure is detailed in the manual for the vehicle. Once in low range, you should get "LOW" written permanently in the LCD information display.

If that doesn't work, then I'd assume (after checking simple things like fuses / relays) that the stepper motor in the transfer box is fried. Probably because it has never been used and the mechanism is seized.

I have checked the fuses all ok how ever i put the fuse in the end part to make it go in neutral the light on the LCD came up saying nautral so think thats ok but not sure which relays to look at and also the stepper motor is that to the back of the transfer box on the out side.

I know this might seem a bit simple, but did you follow the full procedure for selecting low range?
According to RAVE,
Stop completely
apply brakes
select N
FULLY depress the catch on the lever and move over into the low range side N
The car should now beep and warning light flash for a few seconds.
Once LOW is selected, "LOW" will be displayed in the console briefly
Only at that point can you select a low range gear position
Release brakes!

Apparently the H-gate illuminates in Amber instead of Green once LOW is sucessfully selected.
Gears are then prefixed with L in the display i.e "L2" for Low range 2nd gear

Are any of these warnings / messages appearing?

Can you confirm that when it says "TRANSFER NEUTRAL" that it is actually in neutral, and not just saying that because you have put in the fuse!

I think the motor is on the back of the box, but I can't be 100% sure as it is a bit difficult to tell from the drawing, but pretty sure.

Can't seem to find which relays operate it at a quick glance. The circuit is pretty complicated and relys on lots of different sensors! But if you are sucessfully trying to select low range, it should be trying at least, and if it can't then it should be beeping at you and telling you what you need to do!

Hi Matt

i have tried to do all the things you have said but still nothing no light is showing no beep and no amber light on the low part of the T area, i have also tried putting the fuse in and it come up showing TRANSFER NEUTRAL so i then tried putting it in to gear but nothing would happen would not go back or forward so think that bit is working. so just not sure and yes you would think it would start beeping and telling me somthing. would you still say that its the motor could it be the the electric box sorry not sure what its name is!

Only thing I can find out about this is that the transfer box ECU is a known failure item. Apparently not too expensive (for and ECU!) to replace. I'd probably suggest you get it diagnosed by an independent specialist. Having looked at the wiring diagrams, it could be any number of items that is causing the problem. Where in the UK are you?
