Hi All,

I'm in the middle of changing the front output seal on my series 3, and I can't work out how to remove the seal from the housing. I've removed the housing from the transfer box, and the seal is wedged between the main body of the housing and the front lip. Do I need to drive through from the rear of the seal with a drift?

Cheers,
Lew

Hi James,

Thanks for the quick response. How does the seal go past the lip in photo 2: won't the metal lip be damaged?

Well that didn't so so well....when I hammer it, it's just deforming the metal ring in picture 1 - it won't seem to go past the lip in picture 2?

OK, can't seem to get is past the lip in picture 2, the screwdriver is just punching through the metal plate.

there is no lip in pic 2 ,just the outer tin mud shield pressed over the housing ,with the seal sat in it waiting to be punched out from the other side

You could try chiselling through the metal part from the ouside, splitting it to loosen it. The metal seals can be a b, once spent two hours removing one from the rear diff. Brute force and persistence, I'm afraid.
