15mpg on petrol is my guess if your getting 22 on a run without pulling anything. i think 7 mpg is about the right loss. but it can be better than that. i have gas now and i get 30 to 34 mpg with caravan on. speed does make a difference though get into 5th and then stay at that speed 55 is my best speed for pulling. higher or lower and the mpg goes down.
 
biggest problem is you forget the trailer is attached . . . P38 is far too good a tow car.

ive worked it out with the price of petrol to the price of gas. i get around or upto 38 to 40 miles to the gallon equivalent on average. at 47p a liter when i tow the caravan i get 30 to 34. thats why i changed to gas it is better than diesel. ive had lots of range rovers since 1984 and this is the best one i have every had up to now but i have only had it a very short time so there is time for me to spend a coupe of grand on it over the year.as said before the start up petrol is a factor. i do have a engine heater that i use in the winter.

It will be 15 - 17 just gasites double it as the fuel cost is half... but that doesnt take into account the cost of the conversion or the maintaining of it, or the petrol it uses to start up on etc.

As for towing, with my last 4.6 Thor I did a 400 mile round trip to collect a 19' sailing boat on a large twin axle trailer I would guess it weighed around 1000kg all up. Our overall for the journey there and back was about 18mpg. Light at 65-70 you would expect 20mpg from a 4.6 plodding along with a trailer at 55-60 as long as its free running and you can drive without a lead foot I'd expect it to return 15-16mpg. Now if you are suffering with a Gems motor then who knows as you'll need to give it a kicking to get anywhere ;)
 
Thanks for the replies , sounds better than I thought, I'll be fitting lpg in couple of months so I have an idea what to expect .
 
Considering a 4.6 ford mustang modular v8 returns 23mpg average with 5 speed manual and rwd, I'd say some of the figures quoted are a result of gems lean fuelling or driving like a nun which I certainly couldn't manage with a 4.6 v8.
I used to tow frequently with a 4.6 on hotwire efi in an auto classic, I'd average 13 on petrol and 11 on gas which equated to 2mpg thirstier.
Used to get about same towing with 3.9 disco v8 auto
Used to get 15mpg average on a defender 4.0 gems auto but didn't tow with it.
Never set out on an economy drive and figures calculated when refuelled.
 
I averaged around 15 mpg on a trip from past Edinburgh to York towing empty I for Williams trailer weighs 780 kg,picked up discovery chassis,continued down to Worcester picked up Range Rover classic,then back home,around 780 miles,I used £270 on fuel that was running on mud tyres,4.6 gems,thought it was pretty good must have been towing about 3 ton on way back for 400 miles

Because the head gaskets keep popping and the liners drop. :)

The 4.6 on LPG does seem to be about the same to run as the diesel but WAY more refined. It does seem to suffer from more niggles though.
 
hi there go to http://www.lpgc.co.uk the lad there is top class he wil sort you out with what you want and best price ever. i didnt get mine from him. mine was fitted in birmingham ask if you need a gel pack with the system. mine has one its better for it. as petrol lubricates the engine LPG doesnt so it does damage to the valves in some cases. so the gel pack puts lub back in. you top it up once every 3 months well i do. good luck. phil
