Hi, I am trying to establish if it is legal to tow a 110 with a 110 on a 3.5 tonne rated A frame? It would save a buying a trailer and a see a 110 on it's own wheels has got to be better than on a trailer. A good 110 brakes would cope. Help..... I spotted this on ebay 150410550068 would it do? Cheers all.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think a 110 can be towed on an 'a-frame' or a dolly as it might be called, due to the 4x4 system. It would wreck the transfer box, or something

Not legal unless the brakes are linked somehow.
You need to stick it on a trailer.

You're wrong, about the A frame anyway. No problem because all 4 wheels would be turning the same speed. Just stick both boxes in neutral.

To use a dolly, whip off the rear prop.

Ah, I thought by an a-frame he meant one of the things where the front wheels are lifted up onto some supports and the rear wheels run on the ground. My bad!

im sorry but if you had a land rover on a towing dolly you wouldnt need to take of the rear prop? if the vehicle is in neutral and not enguaged onto 4wd, you can tow the the vehicle.

please enlighten me as to how you disengage 4WD on a Defender?

90s and 110s are constantly engaged in 4wd, there is no 2wd mode.
Edit: ya just got there first trewy :)

Or have someone sitting in the driver's seat - as long as the towed vehicles brakes work! There is probably a distance limitation on this tho'.

right ok, this brings a few probs, im now confussed on my gearbox theres high/low, and theres a diff lock right wat does the diff lock do, i thought it locks the diff in the gearbox to give u drive to both props therefor giving u for wheel drive??

You have 4wd all the time, the diff lock locks the centre differential only, meaning that the transfer box will turn both front and rear props at the same speed and at the same time.

soo just to get my head round this, if i jacked my 110 up off the ground and stopped one wheel on front and rear axles then the other to wheels would be driving ?? ie in 4wd.

Yeah they would. With the diff lock engaged, you will always have at least 1 wheel on each axle being driven.

The only way to ensure all 4 wheels drive at the same time all the time is to fit axle lockers in both axles.

Therefor the defender isnt perm 4wd??

in that case a ford mondeo int 2wd either as the same effect will happen on a 2wd drive.

For your information a 4wd is a vehicle to which drive is equally distributed to all 4 wheels which is exactly what happens to a post 83 defender.

If he put it on a dolly and put the transfer and main boxes into neutral it would be ok.

If he was towing it on an A-Frame why would it be illegal unless the brakes were linked? it's far less lighter than putting it on a trailer.
