Had a recent experience trying to tow my 96' Disco.

I was told the Torque Converter would be damaged when it was towed?

I put it in N and took off hand brake and seemed to be ok - needed a longer tow rope for it though!

Quite a few people were laughing and pointing as i was being towed by a 1.3ltr Dahatsu Ferroza !! The tiniest 4X4 i have ever seen!

IS THERE ANY SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS WHEN TOWING AN AUTO 4X4?

*Do you have to disconnect the drive from the engine first?
 
the gear box relies on engine power to cirulate the g/box oil! so if you ain't got your engine turning but you gear box is then you will damage your gearbox/converter unless you only tow it slowly for about 20 miles or so. its really not a good idea to tow an automatic, if you have to then disconnect front and back propshafts. it is better to have it moved by transporter or trailer.
 
when i used to work for a well known roadside rescue service we weren't allowed to tow certain vehichles. the main 2 were automatics and four wheel drives so therefore an auto 4wd is gonna be a big no no. slob is right(again) but he missed out the fact that you also knacker the transfer box:)
 
didn't miss it! just chose not to get too technical t/box g/box same thing when it comes to certain things. K.I.S.S
 
AHHHHHHH !!!!

SO I HAVE BROKEN IT? IM TRYING TO SELL THE BLIMIN THING! THEN IT BREAKS DOWN. NOW IVE TOWED IT AND BY THE SOUNDS OF IT BUGGERED IT!!!!

It was towed approx 10km, still wont start.

looks that way!! before you get too excited , wait till you get it started before you worry about the box being gubbed
