Late disco 2 or early 3, is there a thread already comparing the pros and cons? loved me previous disco2, had it for nearly 21 years from (nearly) new without any mechanical problems and there’s a low mileage one available (expensive though)
Or should I move with the times and go for the 3?
 
You answered your own question. D2 every day of the week for reliability and simplicity of any required maintenance.
Aye, but isn’t there engine problems with the late disco 2s? mine was bombproof but it was a 97 the one I’m looking at is a 2004
 
Early D3 is not a car i would consider purely based on their reliability. The D2 isnt miles better but i can fix them myself and lets face it, its a proper Land Rover.

It is, true, I passed my test in a series 1, hill starts for learners in Gibraltar were ‘character building’…have loved the unreliable sods ever since.
Have had them all, in various states of decrepitude, (not the newer ones, obviously) currently (not) running a P38 and looking for a second vehicle.
Thought, still thinking about, moving into the modern world with a discovery 3…but this very well maintained, low mileage 2 is tempting me to stay in the world where Landrovers could be fixed with an adjustable spanner, a screwdriver and hammer…and blood sweat and tears.
I know the later model 2s are a bit more complicated…but compared to the 3s?
Seems they have so many sensors they can evaluate the stink of your fart.
10k is a lot for an old car but I could pay the same, or more, for a newer three with the same, if not more mileage.
But to be honest, it’s got the same shape and colour of the best car I ever had, so emotion is going to win the day.
Just wanted to be sure there wasn’t the horrendous issues connected to other LR models.

That you can actually repair without a diagnostic unless you have to have a n auto!

Oh aye, I’d love another D1 300tdi my last one went 20 years without any serious mechanical problems but rust got it in the end, I’m hoping the 2 I’m getting next week will be similarly reliable.

D2s rust in the chassis, D1s rust in the body.

But at least the average old skool mechanic can fix a 300tdi!;)
Some stick a D2 body on a D1 chassis. :eek:

Going for the d2, really fancied a d3 but the problems frequently mentioned on here and elsewhere convinced me to keep it simple, 78k with an immaculate chassis should see me out

Do you have a diagnostic?
I have a Foxwell and think it is great for the money, at least you can trust it to get the sensors in the right positions!

Not at the moment, need one that can do the D2 as well as a P38 which is currently a 4.6 but could become a 2.5 or similar, life’s a tad confusing ATM-;

...and THAT is the great benefit of the Foxwell as it does all JLR products. For both the Nano and the Hawk, you have to pay an unlock fee above and beyond the exorbitant initial price, for any other vehicle than the one it was first bought for!:mad::mad:
 
I am seriously considering the RIchards route for my D2

Is a Richards some type of diagnostic?
If so it's one that doesn't get mentioned on here, or if it does I haven't seen it.
Quite a few of us have Foxwells.
