So I topped the oil up, spilt a bit on the gearbox side and now it feels to be down on power and also squeals at about 3k under load

HG done 5k ago but I think the cap is failing, still plenty of water and no contamination in either.

Was running fine, was just a routine check and a bit of a top up as it was on minimum

Is the squeak from the alternator belt?

Not sure why you'd be down on power after an oil top up (unless over filled?)

Why do you think the cap is failing?

Squeeling definitely from gearbox end, I don't think it's over filled but it's always worth a check

Cap was hissing and hoses were soft, I'm sure that's unrelated but just thought I'd post it all

Squeal seems a bit odd? Anything make it worse or better?

Soft hoses sound as though there is a lot of air still in the system... Worth re-bleeding I reckon!

Driving steady it seems ok, give it some revs and it won't Rev out and holds back, then it squeals.

It is very odd. I'm gonna check the cooling in the morning but can also see the cap leaking, no overheating as yet tho. Unfortunately I'm 75 miles from home and setting off back tomorrow

you do have a dip stick don't you, never over fill an engine it will ruin it in as quick time as with no oil

I didn't over fill it, I nursed it back to the B and B when it started acting up and went for some food and drink, then posted up for some ideas. When I checked the oil it was in the middle.
The noise and lack of power are a mystery, must be related to me spilling the oil but I'm not sure how, it's getting a new clutch and a full service soon so going to have a good look at everything then

The crank shaft rear bearing housing has a propensity for failing leaking oil onto the clutch .......
Sounds like a classic case.
If the actuating lever through the bell-housing was so worn that it let in oil then you would have a major issue.
The reason the oil level was low in the first place is probably rear crank seal - adding more only made this worse contaminating the clutch.
Gearbox out, rear crank seal replaced, new combined clutch.
Joe :)

Bit late I know but...

Did the clutch and the rear seal was perfect so I didn't replace it, no oil contamination anywhere

The loss of power and squealing? Oil down the plug hole causing it to miss, new plugs and leads, wd down the plug hole while the plug was out (bit of smoke on start up) and it's run fine since
