Following advice from other Landy owners I took the viscous fan unit off the TD5 now that the weather is a bit cooler. No differance in engine temp. but it now warms up a lot quicker. Was in traffic for a bit this afternoon as well but the temp. gauge never moved.

After all they are engineered to cross deserts!!

(I'll keep the unit in the back for a bit though, just to be on the safe side)

I bought the proper tools do get the fan off but reckon I could have managed without. A long spanner to reach the nut and a quick swipe with a big hammer would probable have it loose. (anticlockwise by the way)

fit a electric fan with stat would be a good move feller...somthing like a kenlow unit...you wouldn't want to cook it...:)

It should be a little quieter, will increase fuel economy by about 5% and will as you say let the engine come up to temp quicker and hold a slightly better temp.

I have 2 sabb fans in my 90, think they come on themselves about once a year, and I sometimes put them on if I know the engine is going to be sitting on with no or little air, like in low range driving up hillsides etc...

ive just done 600 miles in the focus tdi.
the fan came on once, in traffic at the m5/m6 junction! (tonite on the way home).

bad idea, very bad,if its too cool their must be a problemo, takin the fan aff wont cure it,

if its not heatin up quickly, wear a bigger jacket, change thermostats,

Crock of S$*T!

Landrovers rarely need there fans on, my 90 will run all day long in low range on a hot summers day and the fan will only come on when climbing long steeeeep hills.

Remember they are designed to run in hot countries and work hard.

Especially in the winter a LR does not typically need a fan.

PISH, complete and utter why r they made with fans, your saying then that this doods td5 will be fine, "just dont go up any hills mate coz u,r fan will come on, oh hold on YOU WILL not need to worry coz you havent got a fan on, get it out the boot when working take it off when not.

why not just tell um tae get a muff fur the radiator,

u,r fan only comes on when climbing steep hills, "so ur,s is electric.
u,r not running without one "Why not"

doesnt typically need a fan , Whats typically mean,

our landrovers are farm vehicles, our,s work hard, they need fans

maybe u use yours for goin up and down the splash with all your spots on
and chequer plate polished sounds blerrin or some fun gettin dirty at weekend,

and if they rarely need them , surely rarely means they still need them

dont need thems what you have all told this guy, and i hope it doesnt backfire on you
TAKE HEED OF CARTMANS THREAD :D :D :D

Thanks for all the advice,
Well, I put the fan back on!
What I also did was to change the stat and this made a tremendous differance to warm up time. The old stat looked OK but obviously was opening too early.
I've also just fitted a Kenlowe heater (e-bay bargain) which has done away with warm up times altogether as well as being kinder to the battery, engine, etc and done away with de-icing/demisting the screen. (also warms my wuzzy little toes up quicker)

ffs you mean there's more than one.. that will put a serious dent in the average IQ of this site
