Not strictly Range Rover related I know... but....

I am considering moving to Dubai- mainly for the money, lack of rain, tax free earnings, better career opportunities etc. I am fully aware that there are some quite large drawbacks to living there, but cannot make my mind up!

Any thoughts on Dubai? Or ideas on where I can start a new, exciting life?!

I'm not sure of your family circumstances so am not sure if you'd be taking a wife and offspring, but I've always thought Hong Kong would be a good place to be an ex-pat.

It's very British in places (three pin sockets, road names you'd recognise, etc), but also exotic and foreign enough to be interesting.

I've had friends who have been based there for short spells and they've enjoyed it, and I very much enjoyed a trip I had there a few years back.

I do not have a girlfriend (anymore lol!) or children. Free as a bird they say- and see this country going down the ****ter. Not sure I can stand living here for another 70 years!

Had considered HK before, but always got put off in the end. I would obviously spend some time in the prospective country before making the move!

One of my old college buds spends a lot of time in Dubai and places in that region and he likes it for short amounts of times but after about a month he is counting down the days to leave the country. He doesn't see Blighty as being super awesome but to be honest there aren't really many better options. Every country has it's ups and downs, the UK will bounce back. Although the Tax situation needs addressing. The country is currently being crippled by over taxation.

What drawbacks? apart from finger chopping coverd up women Arabs everywhere that offer you lots of camels for white women ????

The state welfare system here is really taking the pi$$, you work hard only to see some scab down the road on more benefits than my salary. There have to be better places in the world to live... and I don't want to be saying 'I wish I had moved away when I had the chance' in twenty years time when I have kids and a wife!
The deficit is going to take some time to 'bounce back' in my opinion- we are are pretty screwed!

Drawback no. 1- you are in a bloody desert- its horribly hot in the summer.
You have to adjust to a completely new culture
You get woken by prayer bells in the night
They are quite racist to anyone other than white/emirati people (although I am white)
I could go on- but there are some awesome benefits- and it wouldn't be forever|!

Marketing Executive for a medical devices/healthcare technology/software company Chris- the job travels well

As a single guy I would say go for it. I went to work in Dubai a few years ago and I really liked it. Loads of ex pats there, good nightlife, great weather, almost tax free wages (about 3%).

The only reason we came back is because my wife really didn't like the city life, not Dubai in particular she is just a country girl. If I was single I'd probably still be there.

Lived in australia for one year when I was 18- loved it, but wouldn't live there. Plus quite difficult to get sponsored to go over- in fact almost impossible.

Fair enough, I guess we're in very different jobs its pretty easy for me to get sponsored in agriculture :)

english is spoken almost everywhere in Dubai- as there are so many expats from around the world effectively running the city. same with HK

You've not been then :D it's beautiful mostly unspoiled wilderness, beautiful weather, nice people on the whole so many different areas/ climates you could drive forever and never see all of it :)

Perfection for me :)

Yes... so many places. I need to do some more research and look into it. I just feel like I am wasting my time in old blighty.
And yes... there is something about Australia that I didn't quite click with- can't put my finger on it.
