So my tratter's modified anyway (300tdi and the matched gearstick) so I shouldn't be feeling like I'm about to shorten the legs of an original Tudor banqueting table ... but I am. Should I really be putting a spankingly marvellous rebuilt disco axle and different type of brakes on my tratter cos the casing of my drum axle has a rust hole and leak? I don't mind from the cost perspective and if it's better, then I'll proceed, but how far is a pimp too far on a traditional def?

I did it to my old tratter cos I hate drum brakes, I even changed the hand brake for a disk:D

Glad you did it then? I've been getting fed up with the grease starring on my rear tyres as I've had no success with the axle dust caps (even genuine ones or seals). Never had problems with brakes not working though.

To be honest the brakes were ok I just find disks much easier to work on and adjust and there's the added bonus that they don't fill up with mud when I was green laning

If the drum 1 is leaking just change over the axle.
It’s a normal modification.
I have disk all round & it’s all about ease for working on it.

(while the back axle is off get them to change the A frame bushes & Aframe knuckle)

Drums are not hard to maintain, but they need keeping on top of, discs can be pretty much ignored until they need pads, calipers are real cheap, something like 25 quid each and they last as well.
We have a mixed bag of drums and discs on the trucks at work, hands down drums are dog shti, always something wrong with the bloody things! do not get me wrong the discs also play up, but when the discs themselves last nearly a million km and the pads 300,000 to 400,000km with callliper rebuilds with the new discs, who cares?

I have had my 90 for nearly 10 yrs, rear axle in that time one set of discs/pads and four rear calipers.

One of the best mods on a land rover.
Was going to do the series as well, but I am to tight!
I done the handbrake conversion due to changing transfer box twice & as 1 was disco it would have needed the back plate changing to LR. Once set up I have not had a problem(had a week when it would not lock but was just cable problem)

makers will sort that out for you lol
I have a couple of new props sitting on the shelf I'll fit them when I fit the hb disc
probably over the festive, now the jobs are mounting up. o_O:D

The chap who works on my Landy is a landy expert of @jamesmartin proportions, a mechanic for the Dubai rich and famous on their sahara wacky races and all, but I still like to know from others what I should make sure I get done at the same time as I'm changing the axle and brakes, so if anyone's got time to list the other replacements I should ask him to do whilst he's at it, please list for me. Thanx.

You just can't get decent plastic/rubber dust caps any more. My 1990 90 has series metal cap's, seal good with a touch of silicon.:)

My genuine caps have been on for about 5 years with zero problems so far. Guess I ought to check axle oil levels!
