So ive been trying to get this motor running, and, today had it idling for about 10 mins, for the first time in a month or so.

Small patch of black liquid under the timing case.

This is what it looked like inside -

Not much spatter, as its only just started, but the belt is wet.

The three (?) options are -

Crank seal
Cam seal
IP front seal (in which case its fuel, and the blackness is grime being flushed)

Considering the front cover is off, how do i go about working out where the fluid is coming from?

(i know the timing is out in the photo - that's why the cover is off!)

Seems to only leak with the engine running, so, i guess i might see evidence, but can i be certain?

Or should i just replace the crank and cam seals anyhow - its not like i mind doing them, but if its not them, then i always think "if it aint broke..." and i start messing, then...

I need to get the IP resealed anyhow (viton seal required), as i run bio, and the front seal will go at some point or other.

remove the cam and pump pulley
This. you might be able to see more by doing this, and thus have a better idea where your leak is.
If it was the crank, I might expect more grime - but that depends on the state of the oil.
Given you already suspect the IP front seal, then might be an idea to start there... your nose night tell you if this is the case too...:)

good luck with it.:)

Ive just ordered all the seals (except IP) in at my local parts place - will be there tomorrow.

Gone for OE, if that makes any difference (loads of people seem to have problems with the crank seal replacement)

As far as i can tell, the crank is a case of taking off the sprocket, and, somehow, pulling out the seal. Then using a drift of some sort to carefully press in the replacement to a depth of, i think, 0.5mm below surface?

But the cam seal im a whole load less sure of... (?)

Take a look at the position of the seals before you remove them and put them back to the same depth the injection pump only has a gasket not a seal. Might be worth swapping the timing belt whilst you're at it cos you'll have to remove it anyway
