My mate has a 1985 county LWB, is this a Defender of series?
Its a 2.5 NA diesel dose it have a timing chain, or belt and how do you adjust it?

1985 would be a defender. As for chain or belt, im not sure! Hope this is of some help!

Cheers,

Mike

1985 is NOT a Defender - utility L/Rs became known as Defender when the TDI engine was fitted.

The vehicle is a Land Rover 110 CSW probably and the engine has a timing belt. As for adjusting it - don't bother. To go to all the trouble of adjusting it you may as well fit a new one and be done with it.

Why do you think it needs adjusting?

Its a friends landie, he tells me its clicking and he thought it was a chain.
How do you change the belt?

With all due respect, if you are asking how to change a timing belt....put it in the hands of a profesional.

Timing belts are a critical component, if these are incorrectly fitted then you will end up with a large repair bill.

Buy a manual and follow the lengthly instructions in there by all means but on that engine there is alot to remove before you even see the belt.

Im not trying to be rude or patronising but its not worth taking risks, play safe and get someone to do it for you.

regards

Jim:)

Agreed Jim, it's a critical & far from straightforward job on any vehicle. Great learning curve if you don't mind making a mistake & trashing your engine the first time you try it (been there & done it & it wasn't even the first time!), but balancing trashed engine against paying a few extra bob for someone else to do it, I know where I'd spend my money!

Thanks for your concern Jim, but he is very experianced and competent to change a belt, its just the question came up and as we are too buzy to look thought we could ask here.
I do understand what you are saying as I have seen plenty of engines damaged by in experianced people.
