I am looking at getting some Thule roof bars but cannot make up my mind which feet will fit the Defender 90 Hardtop the best.

According to different websites I can use the following sets of feet:

Thule 952: 20 cm feet (gutter to bar)
Thule 953: 28 cm feet (gutter to bar)
Thule 420: 27 or 29 cm (gutter to bar) depending on webiste

Has anyone got either of these? - and if so, how do they fit? E.g. space between roof and bar, as I am not too keen on having my load sitting too high above the roof. Some pics would be great too, as they tend to say more than 1000 words.

Cheers,

why would you want the bar a foot above the gutter??

That is the point! I don't want the bar a foot above the gutter but actually as close to the roof as possible without touching of course, and with a little bit of give.

The top of the roof is 18,1 cm from the gutter which suggests using the Thule 952 feet, but because of their shape I would like to know if they can fit without the side of the roof getting in their way.

Get yourself some Rhino ones

Far more substantial and designed for the job

RHINO DELTA BAR SYSTEM - 3 Bar system, using the new aerodynamic Delta Bar - Rhino Products Ltd UK

I've got the 3 bar Delta system complete with rear roller and load stops - very impressed

Sounds good. I need them to carry a kayak on the roof and presume that available standard kayak carriers will fit onto the bars.

What sort of clearance do you get between the roof and the bars?

Cheers

First Four make the best Fender roof bars IMHO

They fit reasonably snuggly - about 2cm from memory - can out one on and measure if critical for you

Or go for the Mantec one's. Pretty substantial with holes all across the top so you can mount things to them. They fit well with not a lot of stand off- but can't get into multi storey car parks with them on.
