Hey everyone, new to the forum and seeking a bit of info and advice before i purchase a freelander. I am looking to get a freelander to use for work i currently drive a vw caddy sdi so instead of buying a car as well for after work i am looking to get a freelander TD4 (05 Plate) to have best of both worlds. I have a few questions which i hope you guys can give me a bit of help with,
Can you tell me roughly what the MPG is for these? (most driving will be short trips but will have the odd jobs which are a bit further out), also i will be buying one with a manual gearbox.
Can you tell me what the boot space dimensions are?
Do the back seats fold up all the way or just the tops fold down? (would prefer to keep them in as long as all my tools etc will fit in otherwise may have to rip them out).
All i planned to do with the rear windows was get them tinted with company logo on etc - any thoughts on this?
Are there any mods i could get done to improve MPG? i am currently only getting around 38mpg in my caddy which is pretty terrible for a van!!

Are they reliable.. NOPE.

Do they like garages.. YEP.

That ticks the box for most Land Rovers as well :p:D
But not the bit where you enjoy the ride. Specially if it's harsh, uncomfortable, cold coz yer has to drive with the window down if yer has an elbow and yer gets cold water down yer neck when yer has to break...

i didn't and it's cost me two new fuel pumps, a knackered 2nd gear synchro (need new gearbox), a non working (currently taped) rear passenger window and anything else that decides to go wrong in the near future :p
the rear boot space isn't massive, but the seats fold completely forward, more than doubling that space. the plastic boot walls and boot door panels scratch really easily (had my bike in a few times before i got my bikerack).
as i said, buy it from a dealer and you shouldn't have the above mentioned problems, and use a good boot liner to avoid spiky things damaging your trim :)
p.s get all terrain tyres on it... even if you don't need them.... because they look nails :p

Fuel economy will be about the same, seat do fold flat. Dont listen to the negative "banter". Plenty of good ones out there, helps if you know what you're looking at and handy with a spanner is essential to avoid rip off garage bills, like any car.
 
you have to buy the bits to go with it, pink, shirt, sunglasses, fake tan etc, or is it just me

I had a 2001 & now have the face lift 2005:dance:. 1.8 - petrol, head gaskets are a pain, check it? Clutches wear. The main things are Viscous Coupling Unit & rear diff. ALSO !!!!! Check it has a prop shaft:search:. I part ex mine without one:rolleyes:. I may also be removing this one.

Ignore the so called "Real Land Rover" boys:baby:. If it isnt a Defender, 90 or 110 they think its ****! F em! If you want it, it looks OK & you like it. Have it.:dance:
 
Just checked back on this post and never realized there were so many replies (been working my ba**s off so the idea of replacing my caddy was way in the distance), thanks everyone for all the advice much appreciated! Well i took the plunge today and ended up buying one, i was originally after the hse spec but one came up which was a TD4 adventurer (and since i will more than likely wreck it with work gear i ditched the idea of leather interior etc), 74000 miles, black (didnt want any other colour), totally immaculate, full service history and after haggling my ass off i got it for 4k. Read a lot of posts on here regarding the VAG, read that if you feel a vibration under the footwell then it could be a problem? Took it for a test drive and never felt a thing but never hit any motorways, driving back on the motorway as soon as i hit 75 there is a vibration under the driver footwell it was like pulsing on and off lasting 2 seconds on and 2 seconds off but only when i hit 75 and over, is this the common problem i have read about? DANG!!! Other than the weird pulsing everything else is fine and im pleased i bought one!

Well done and welcome to the world of FL ownership. What mileage is it on? The VCU may need to be looked at if you're getting transmission rumble, did you check that the rear propshaft was in place?

I have a 04 TD4 and think its a great machine. A few faults but no bad, easily fixed. Love the driving position and the drive. Great in bad weather and snow. Engine is reliable very. MPG 35 on long run, about 30 on short trips. As soon as I drove mine feel for it couldn't believe and good it felt.
 
Hi, mileage is at 74000 and no i didnt check the propshaft, first time i have owned a 4x4 so just checked what i would check on a car, never felt vibration on test drive and didnt realize i would have to be at speed to hear something, it dosent start until i hit 75
