Hi,

I'm new to 4x4's need something more practical and I'm thinking about purchasing a discovery. Probably have about £4,000 to spend or so. I guess I'd be looking around N reg/P plate etc for that sort of money.

What things should I be looking out for and aware of?

Thanks in Advance,

Hawk

make sure the boot floor isn't rotten, check when the cambelt was last changed and make sure its not 2 cars welded together(sorry lenny;) )

How very dare you!!!!!

You are one of a long list of people who find it funny to mock me.

Worst is i deserve it for being so stooooopid.... :)

( i wont mention ive been into buying/selling cars for 20 years)

Yella disco you too may mock me as i also was stoooooopid and didnt look where hawk lives.....DOH ! LOL Thanks for that...

Cheers for the replies guys, what's this about 2 cars welded together??? or shouldn't I ask lol.

What's the gearboxes like, heard some stories that there prone to problems, is this true?

Roughly how much mileage is there in the 2.5 Diesel engines?

All The Best,

Some buffoon named Lenny (no relation, ahem) bought a disco that was mint.
Mint as in polo, e.g big hole through the middle.
The front and rear were both from the same model and year disco, alas not made on the same day or bolted to the same chassis.

As for mileage, i expect mine to do more miles than the starship enterprise, although it wont be going boldly anywhere no-one else has been first.......lol

is that the front half or the back ;)

Lenny, is there signs that it has been 2 different vehicles, i.e weld marks on chassis etc. as i have already bought my 2.5l V8i (ahm Petrol), where would you look?

To be honest i never spotted it, a policeman did who actually wanted to buy the car. he pulled back door rubber on passenger side and found welding down middle where the 2 halves were joined. It went from there.
Apparently there is 3 vin plates on them (200 tdi), one under bonnet, one on front chassis, one on rear chassis. The one on the rear of mine deffo belonged to the bit it was riveted to, alas the other 2 didnt belong to anything remotely like a motor vehicle, in fact ones number indicated i had purchased not a disco, but a small holding in Masedonia with 3 sheep, one large duck and a gaggle of geese!!!!

Also according to the police investigation chappie, there is a bar coding type system on the axles of land rovers to identify them, which even my land rover specialist didnt know about. And he runs a land rover owners club!!!
