I keep getting asked Q's about this so I am gonna start this fred about how I use waste veg oil (wvo). This method takes no investment, uses no dangerous chemicals and only uses a small amount of shed space but.....
A little disclaimer before you read this........
This is how I filter wvo and run my 200tdi, It is only intended as reading matter, if you follow it and bugger up your motor it ain't my fault.....alright. Saying that I have been running the old disco like this for over 2 and a half years with no real probs. apparently common rail injection engines don't like wvo so it's up to you to try it or not.
So here goes.........
1. I get wvo from wherever I can, I only use a little at work but I frequent a couple of boozers that let me take it for free. Legally you should give them a waste transfer notice which can be found here Environment Agency - Duty of Care but that's up to them if they want one or not. You don't need a waste carriers license to transport it as it's only small amounts for domestic use.
If you don't work in the food business and want to find wvo ask about, all restaurants, pubs, schools, take aways, chip shops etc use it so go ask them if you can take it away for them.
2. To filter it I have an 80l drum with a tap fitted about 6-8 inches from the bottom into which I pour the wvo through a fine sieve to remove any big bits of stuff and leave it to settle for at least 10 days. The idea being that any water/crap still in the oil sinks to the bottom and the tap is above that level.
3. I then pass the wvo into clean 20l containers through these 18" FILTER BAGS,3 x 1 MICRON ,BIO DIESEL ,VEG OIL, | eBay I always use 1 micron filters. These can be used again and again and are machine washable (just scrape all the crud out of them first ).
4. There ya go, you've got cleaned wvo to mix into whatever proportions you may need depending on the time of year. I mix unleaded with the oil in these containers in either 5/10% before putting it in the tank as I think it emulsifies better and if I'm using any derv I just add that at the pump.
I'll give you a rough guide to the mixes I use.
Summertime I use 95% wvo 5% unleaded no derv at all, my fave time of year v' cheap to run
Autumn/ springtime I use roughly 80%wvo 10% unleaded 10% derv.
Deepest darkest winter I use 60% wvo 10% unleaded 30 % derv.
You really need to just do it and work out the best mixes for your self. All the oil I get has the anti foaming agent additive in it which some say is bad, I dunno you decide.
Oh and don't forget to keep a little notebook in your cubby box of how much oil you put in and when just in case.
You'll also need to change your fuel filter after the first couple of tanks and then every 3-4 months, buy them in bulk and they're only a couple of quid each.
