We I just seen Richard hammond give a tour of the off road super computer that's what they are calling it I calling it a box of ****ing tricks. The 110 looks very similar to my wifes freelander 2. I will nail my flag to the mast. That's not a defender try floating that down a river inside full of water. It would never start again God it got some fancy starter that give power back to it brakes or something. THEY HAVE LOST THE PLOT . No dought it will be a nice drive ect good off road going over things ect . It's no different to me than the wifes freelander 2 only it's got MORE electronics. Keep a hold of your real defenders they will only increase in value. People dont want all the electronics. My farmer friends are now ordering tractors with minimal electronics in side special order from factory because a switch on the tractor fails it takes out another few systems as well meaning they can work the tractor. The new defender is for rich school run mums. Not for crossing Africa. WHAT A SHAME! 2019 toyota https://jalopnik.com/the-best-2019-toyota-land-cruiser-is-not-for-sale-in-am-1837984530 if I did not have landrovers I would be off to toyota at least they still build off road vehicles

If I didnt have a LR90, I'd have a Jimny.

I'm off work today, so what the hell, I tried "building my Defender" with all the best options (even the fag lighter and ashtray, and a tyre pressure gauge at £31!) and it came to £105,083.
Now. what about insurance...

There are a lot of options to pick through. Very expensive. Will be a few years before these make it out on the pay and play sites or green lanes.

Do like the look of the 400bhp option....

Emissions standards are here to stay and increasing legislation will soon be illegal and unusable on many/most roads and taxed so highly they will be worthless!

It’s sad to think that someday I might have to make my series electric. Just a silent whirring instead of being deafened in the cab.

Could then afford to drive it to work i guess

The future is bleak

And by the time the government makes our Defenders illiegal, we will either be dead, or our LRs will have rusted to scrap. There are too many diesels out there on the roads for a government to be able to deal with.

Yeah maybe in London but the rural areas don't pay heed to that ****. Also that Brexit thing will at least mean further rejection of EU directives.

That being said I did see some EU Bull**** that they want all non-electric vehicles off the road by 2040 which is in my lifetime. Yet any vehicle that are 30-40 years old by then will probably be exempt.

I think alot of young guys think this electronics is a set forward. In a car that's meant to go anywhere it a liability. Just take a look at a td5 discovery if it immobiliser take a turn you need x amount of readers to fix it. That's 1 ECU all those 85 will be networked together. It would be a ****ing nightmare. We could not fix that you would need a full dealers workshop with some fancy software. Not a hut in africa somewhere. I recon this is the beginning of the end for landrover. They are assuming they will sell loads wait till there a few years old second hand market will crash if you got one with some electrical problem it will be dealer only and a fortune. I recon they have shot their self in the head. They have killed themselfs

the new defender is the exact type of car , that made me want to buy a defender ..

I wanted no tech , no stupid electrics , I wanted to be able to fix it myself and didnt want to buy another car ..lol...

Think they have lost the plot with the new defender ...

It was so foreseeable . Its a vehicle version of an "app" whereas the original defender was a vehicle version of a hammer ! Its not even a good interpretation of a real landrover , its another variation on a theme that is Velar , evoque, Discovery sport , RR sport ,FFRR . I dont need another version of My RR Supercharged .

Well, at some stage in the near future I need to replace my daily super reliable but aged Subaru Forester XT. I've just taken a close look at the Defender and I think it's great[!] Over the past couple of years I've looked at all sorts of 4x4/AWD cars to replace the Forester...ideally I want another Forester XT but the new ones are somewhat, meh. For me key attributes of the Forester is its power @ 257bhp, light off road ability...they're huge huge fun in the snow...all leather interior, its panoramic moon roof and genuine go everywhere I want it to go: I travel to the Alpes frequently where the FXT excels.

The new D90 P300, although with smaller rear load space, is near perfect as a replacement with full length sunroof and 300hp/400Nm. Have closely viewed the interior and it looks great. My only reservation would be the genuine need for 85ECU's and 21,000 network functions...whatever 21,000 network functions do; me, I'd be happy with wind up windows and quarter lights :) Price-wise, I cannot afford the £45k + accessories cost so I'll have to wait a couple of years and buy second hand, which will allow JLR to iron out the software bugs of the 85ECU's...!

I actually like it. However, it's not a practical vehicle for Africa or any other third world country. Charities that buy those vehicles need basic, minimum electrics in their machines. Mainly cos this keeps costs down and are usually fixable by the roadside. I cannot see this being the same with this new model. And as a previous comment said 'They've shot themselves in the foot!'. Such a bloody shame!

You've just made the main point of this failure on the part of landRover , its a replacement for a Forrester , not a defender .

God it got some fancy starter that give power back to it brakes or something.

They have a version with a mild hybrid that uses a generator to capture some of the energy usually lost through brake heat, and direct it back into a battery which can then augment the engine. I have no major issue with this - it shouldn't leave you stranded if it fails, but I agree with your main point that this is no longer a reliable globe-trotting, fix-in-the-field vehicle. With 85 ECUs it will be massively complex to repair and maintain, and will therefore require sophisticated, high technical merit workshop facilities that will be tricky, if not impossible to find in many parts of the world.
No point selling it cheaply - you will have to be loaded just to maintain it.
