I bought my second hand Freelander last feb (2006) and since then it has not been very nice to me!
Firstly 2days left on the warranty this Feb (2007) The Head gasket went along with the rear exhaust box and heat shield.

Then yesterday (3months later) had to call AA out to find out why it was making such a crazy noise...and it turns out that the manifold has blown. AA guys reckons he hasn't seen it happen before (that's nice!)

Anyways, it's booked in tomorrow for a diagnostic with Lookers Land Rover of Chelmsford. Which will cost £85 per hr + VAT! ouch!

What I wondered is...has anyone had this happen to them? Roughly how much is it going to set me back now that it is out of the warranty?
Also....is it in anyways related to the work that was done only 3mnths ago? And if so, should I be liable to pay for it?

Would love some advice here! :)

Well fust off Welcome lass!

secondly, Yeh the manifold gastek "should" o bin disturbed when yer had the head done. Specially if yer had it done at the stealers, So it should last longer than 3 months
Furdly. Dont take it in for diagnostics. Ya'll ready know wots up with it and if its the same place that did yer head Tell em to "GERRIT PUT RITE ";)

Happy hippo'in !:D

An make sure they acutally fitted a manifold gasket back on it when they did the head, and maybe get a friendly indie to check manifold securing nuts for tightness - these things just do not work loose on their own or make sure you are present when its checked over. Really does sound like someone has done a crappy old job on it somewhere along the line!

Exhaust manifolds are prone to snapping on the 1.8's. Only on 2001 onwards though, land rover in their wisdom did away with the flexi bit on the downpipe, the engine moving back and forth work hardens the manifold till it snaps at the welded jopint, dont replace it, they're about 300 quid, get someone to weld it up, I've welded loads and never had any trouble.
