So I've been lurking on here and stalking Donedeal for quite a while now and I have finally got my first Defender. :biggrin1:

The Honey Badger (as it will now be called) is a 1989 110 Van with the original 2.5TD engine and genuine lumps and bumps. The bulkhead is in great condition as is the chassis with only one patch on the rear cross member. It does have high mileage at 212k miles but was owned by the government for approx its first 10yrs, so probably well maintained. It has all the usual dings, dents and bumps but practically rust free. Paint work is not 100% but I'm not worried at the minute..

Was told it had lots of work done to it by a previous owner and that it isn't leaking!! Well it hasn't leaked, but it has spat out oil I'm guessing from the air filter or where ever it comes from when they breathe their oil. I reckon the 70mph trip up the motorway caused that!

So gona get my pen and paper out to make a list of work that needs doing and then prioritise whats need, etc

Think that will be a 110, not a Defender.
That is a very good mileage for 19j, assuming it is original engine, I would expect it to be fairly worn by now.
What exactly do you mean by "spat out oil". Where is the oil coming from?

I was searching on landyzone and it seems to be a common problem with the 19J's to breathe their own oil, so I'm assuming its this. the little pool of oil is beside the front left wheel so i didn't think it was the engine itself that was leaking, haven't done much investigation to the actual source yet

Shouldn't breathe oil unless very worn, badly maintained, or issue such as HG
Sure its engine oil? Swivel or axle oil could leak in that area too.
Oil from leaking turbo feed or return pipe would end up in round there too.
 
Long way forward on the vehicle where the pool of oil is. Might be leaking rocker cover and running down block, or running out of air filter! Whatever, I would try and find out where its coming from.
Might be worth pulling off the rocker cover cap and seeing how much crankcase pressure you have, that is often what causes the oil spitting.

Are you in Ireland, or just Irish vehicle?

His description as defender is going to be a lot better than what would have been on donedeal .......I would put at least 10p ( or 12c) on it being described as a J©©P.

Op. Should be fairly rust free ?

If you want to keep it get extra security devices installed
 
The forbidden "J" word you mentioned was not in the add actually.
Will have to have a root around to see what the source of the oil leak is from.
Yes I'm in Ireland, and I will be either locking it up in the garage or blocking it in, for the moment anyways.
Yea its pretty rust free, the doors are a bit fragile and not in great shape but almost all just cosmetic stuff wrong with it....and the leak!

You need a Disc lok and a clutch claw type pedal locks and a shift lever lock.

Door frames are always hanging on landies that age, wouldn't worry about it. Bodge em up as long as you can, then get better ones.
Chassis, bulkhead, engine and trans. If they are good, all else is easily fixed. Do keep an eye on oil and coolant levels, these engines are fussy like that! ;)

Bought engine degreaser so will get it cleaned up on monday and will know better then. but for now it isnt leaking anywhere else. i still reckon its to do with 19j's breathing their own oil and this one was collecting it in the air filter or somewhere and has leaked out.
Would an oil catch tank sort this out?

I did say it might be coming from the air filter. Not a good sign, I would have a look at the air filter element, it is probably black sludge in the can.
A catch can might help, but for safety it would be better to route the breather into the chassis until you can look into why there is so much crankcase pressure.
 
I think that's the problem and that's why there was a small pool of oil after driving cos it was collecting in the air filter. Have ordered all new filters including an air filter and gona get a catch tank now too.

Remove the oil filler cap with engine running and you will get an idea of the crankcase pressure. You may hear rhythmic chuffing, head gasket will likely be gone, these engines are prone to it! Try setting the tappets too.
