I understand this is a pretty common problem. I understand replacing the offending article is a very time consuming job. I understand nobody in their right mind would attempt such a job at their home, on their driveway with limited tools and sensitive neighbours.

Tomorrow morning i will begin the task of replacing the clutch, slave cylinder and VCU. I'll give her a bit of a service while I'm at it. I figure it'll probably be easier to access belts etc while the wheels and drive shafts are out of the way.

Anyways, just thought i'd let you all know what I'm up to and that i intend to keep a sort of 'photo diary' on here (just in case I'm not the only lunatic on here).

Wish me luck!

Quick question......

My little Freelander is an '03' on an '03'. How do i know if it's a DMF or conventional single flywheel arrangement? There must be a parts fiche or something i can search that'll tell me. Right....? If i wiggle the gearbox out to find I've bought the wrong clutch kit my sense of humour would be tested.

Cheers guys.

If it's diesel (TD4) then it left the factory with a DMF.
If it's petrol (K series) it'll have a SMF;

I have read on here several times its best to replaced the slave cylinder, but some makes are pants and only a year or so. Hopefully someone can tell you the reccomended make. Will be interested in your blog as my clutch is mega heavy and I think it needs replacing.

It's a TD4.... Awe shucks. I'm going to sit in the corner of a dark room and rock for little while.

Updates to follow.
Find a good local parts supplier and buy the kit locally, that way if there are any issues you can go back to them.
Not sure why the DMF is bothering you, is the car on silly high miles? If not test the DMF and if ok refit. There are videos on Youtube showing you how.

You might be running a single plate clutch rather than the original dmf....

She's done 120k, not much at all really. Just thought I'd get one just in case.

Unless it's had a very very hard life towing it is more likely to be OK. I'd go for the clutch and slave kits and not worry about the DMF unless it is obviously bad.

The Freelander's DMF isn't a known week point really. The clutch isn't great so buy an OE replacement.
The DMF should be reusable, but check it first. ;)

Firstly, let me thank you for your advise, it is all gratefully received.
Secondly, i have a confession to make. When supported by axle stands, the height of the vehicle's underside doesn't allow sufficient clearance to remove the gearbox - the bell housing being to larger diameter. What this means is I've had to bite the proverbial bullet and take her to a local garage.

This is doubly disappointing because now, not only am i paying someone else to work on my car but also, i was quite looking forward to getting stuck in and seeing what sort of shape she was in.

I would therefor like to apologize to those among you who were looking forward to my pictorial diary of works ont' drive.

Hopefully the clutch and slave kit will sort the issue and i can save up for some other tasty goodies!

That's a bummer, I saw a photo somewhere of how high the front of the car needs to be to get the gearbox out from below and it was scary high.

??? Put some wooden blocks under the axle stands to make them higher.

I've done this job without a lift or engine hoist so standing by to give advice if you need it...

I'm looking for another project and have found a car that is advertised as having a dodgy clutch so I might be taking you up on that offer if you are still offering. :)

Nice link thanks, if I can get the car cheap enough I will probably go for it. So long as the flywheel is OK it shouldn't be too expensive and as I've already done the job on a K series a lot of the work will be the same.
One thing though, Last time I did it I don't think I took the drive shafts off the wheel hubs, not sure if that was the best way to do it or not but I was able to pull the hubs out of the way with the drive shafts connected.

No need to remove the drive shafts from the hubs. Just pop the bottom ball joint and the track rod joint. This allows more than enough room to disengage the drive shafts from the box and IRD;)

Thanks Nodge, that's what I thought. In the site linked to they completely remove the drive shafts.
I'm looking at clutch prices and I see Eurocarparts are selling an AP clutch kit and a LUK slave cylinder for £202 but with todays discount it is £153. Assuming the flywheel is OK is there anything else I will need to complete the job?
