Ok a couple of people have suggested a new thread trying to pinpoint the problem, here goes:

I bought this thing (18. petrol ****box freelander) a week ago, the previous owner says he hade the thermostate removed (but does not no which one) because he was told they can suffer from overheating problems although he says this has not happened to him.
THE PROBLEM after driving the vehicle for approx 30 - 40 mins it losses power for a few seconds take your foot off the pedal the engine ticks over, foot back on all seems to be fine again.
There is no coolant loss or disscolouration in the expansion tank, the fuel pump makes a humming noise constantly and when starting first thing the temp gauage goes to normal quickly but does not rise any higher nor does it overheat. A couple of garages have said it is HGF but im not a hundred percent sure, I have been back to the original owner he swears blind this nmever happened to him maybe he didnt drive it long enough but has agreed to pay half of repair, any ideas what it could be would be appreciated, Thank you all so far guys, one last thing thinking of buying a defender swb any suggestions on which one to get/not toget. Which one do you want? What can you afford. Buy on condition not age.

I'd plump for a nice 200Tdi/300Tdi but you might like the TD5 if that's within budget. (I'd still rather have the TDi.)

Cheers
