im replacing the front and rear output shaft bearings on my 300tdi transfer box. Does anyone know whether to grease them up, or smother in gear oil given that's what'll probably keep them lubed up whilst running.

Hopefully this clears the whining noise I have in all gears. They were rusty and the oil all gunky. Both leaking so hopefully new bearing and seal will resolve

Cheers chaps

I lightly greased them when I did mine, nowhere near as much as wheel bearings, just to make sure they rotated smoothly. I wouldn't think using gear oil would hurt either, so long as you use something so they aren't dry when fitted.

Cheers, I'll grease them then. That's what I thought but helpful to get it confirmed

Think you may have to go a lot deeper into the transfer box to cure a whine. Intermediate shaft bearings failing maybe favourite. Put the oil used in the box on them.
