Which of these terminals do I need to connect up to get the starter motor / solenoid to work? I would like to see them running myself before I re-fit it. The wiring diagram in the book is not very clear to me.

Thanks for any replies.

Thanks for the replies.

What about the two terminals on the solenoid that say "IGN"? Do I need to connect these together to get it to work?

No. Connect positive to the threaded terminal on the solenoid with the longer threaded stud. Connect the negative to the mating flange where it bolts to the gear box and short out the single push connector with the positive. It should then operate if it's good

Sorry I'm still not clear on what to do with the positives. I have several push connectors on the solenoid.

The longer of the two threaded connectors on the solenoid is the positive.
On the silver cap at the back of the starter is the negative.
Ignore the two male connectors which are together for now; but you will need them for powering your ignition and for charging from the alternator. You will need these when you refit the starter to the Landy.
One of the two other male connectors is to energize your solenoid, it might be marked IGN, but if not short each one seperately with your positive supply to the threaded terminal and hope it works.

I never actually got round to trying this.

So from the descriptions, connecting it up as shown here should turn the motor?

Black is correct, positive goes on the red bolt. The green push-on you short out with the positive to operate the starter as show in the photo below.

Thanks, that makes it clearer.

So when I connect these up, the gear should move forward and turn at the same time?

Yes, and keep your fingers away from it;)
If it won't work with the small connect I marked green then try the other single connector. I think the one I marked is the right one.
