P38, 2001 model with BMW diesel, 150 000 km:
A few days ago with a lukewarm engine I tried to start the engine, but by mistake pulled back the ignition key just when the starter motor engaged.
I then did a proper starting sequence and the engine started, but with a rattling sound as if all the valves were ticking at the same time. Being not far from home I drove slowly home with a rattling sound. Downhill the rattle was almost gone, but as soon as there was a flat, rattle as an old Mercedes 180.
Coming home I could smell unburned diesel fumes behind the car.Next day when trying to start, she does not want to start, but after a long time slowly with the assistance from the starter motor she start to turn around, a steady valve rattle as the day before, perhaps worse since she was cold. Strong smell of unburned diesel fumes and bellowing blackish smoke.
Have read the attached info with a Nanocom (at idle with a rather cold engine as I can not let her run for a long time with the rattle and smoke) , can loock as if the Timing Modulation is way off. Can this be due to the timing chain jumping a tooth? or can this be due to the no. 4 injector being faulty?
Also the value for the SWG setpoint seems to be too high.
Any ideas to where to attack appreciated.
