On the lookout for a roof tent for the Summer.

Howling moon look the muts nuts.........but pricey

What do you think of these on fleabay:

buy a popup tent and just stick it a sheet of ply on ya roofrack fook of a lot cheaper than a howling wolf jobby!

Bit of a shifty site when they won't advertise their tents to avoid ebay fees?? Doesn't inspire confidence.

I've just bought one of those tents from fleabay, seems very nice so far, although I havent actually put it on the landy yet  Should be doing our first trip with it early next month, and I let you know how it performed and post some pics.

They are made in the same factory as Howling Moon, but use nylon instead of canvas. So they aren't as solid, but then they are lighter.

The guy who sells them is out of stock, but will have some more early March, you'll get the RT01 for 599, and the RT02 for 999 on ebay, which is slightly cheaper than his website Land Rover Roof Tents

I agree with Red .. on both counts .. ;)

I've had tents and caravans all my life and simply can't see where some of these roof tent suppliers get their pricing policies from. Trouble is without seeing them and feeling the quality it's pot-luck and trusting to other people experiences, honesty and judgement .. and everyone has different levels of what satisfies them or not.

I'd say go to an exhibition and see what you're buying. These might look cheap, but might be far more costly in the long run ....

It's complicated :D

The roof tent was fine to be honest, it is cheap, so it won't last as long a Hannibal. If fact my zip broke on the trip. It may actually have been operator error , and to be fair to them they replaced the whole zip thing free.

If I was going to buy a conventional tent and keep it for a long time I'd definately buy a Hannibal.. However after one trip I'm probably going to can my tent in favour of a trailer/expedition truck, so now I am glad I got the cheapie, cause I'll loose less than if I bought and resold a Hannibal straight away.

You may have noticed Griff says the Maggiolina is the only way, in fact he has said it 3 million times, but nobody seems takes any notice of him :D

I can see the appeal of a hardshell tent, less flapping in the wind etc, but it does take up your entire roof rack, and it makes you look a bit like a french tourist :p

It will be the first real trip that I will do and may be the only one so dont want to go loosing to much, so may go down that route, or just ebay it for a 2nd hand one.....as long as it dont look french......

Roof tents generally seem an expensive option, for the space they provide. You have to sleep in the car park... and hope it's level!.

When touring northern Zambia, I used a dome tent and was able to camp in much better spots...

I admit the roof tent had it's use but I wouldn't buy another one... especially for those evening comfort breaks - don't forget you're 6' off the ground...after a night on the local brew:doh:

Caranex with a dome tent has proved a good combination... especially as I dislike roofracks - noise/fuel consumption/stability/wind resistance etc...
