Morning all,

Started my 1974 series this morn and noticed the temperature gauge moved right up into the red within seconds, before i'd even moved!!

As the engine had just started from cold, it can't be reading the temp properly.
It has always stayed in the "normal" range. And if the gauge/sensor was broken, surly the needle wouldn't move!

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

At a guess you may have an earth problem on the gauge or a short.

I had similar when I fitted my new gauge just put a new earth in and fine.

my guess is the wire on the temp switch has come off / snapped and resting on the engine giving the gauge a high reading :)

Yes, high reading mean shorted to ground usually. First check wiring.

Temp sender is near front of block (green wire I think) check that all looks well. with ignition on if you pull the terminal off it should read cold. If you short it to block should read hot. If passes both tests then suspect the sensor...
