Doing a full chassis rebuild on my 110 at the moment and strongly thinking of going for a TDV8 as have sold the VNT off the engine to a friend with the plan of getting the bigger version so rather than that expense and pushing the TD5 nearly as far as it can go, thinking of just putting it towards a new engine.

Never had any trouble with the TD5 other than a set of injector washers even though it's 190K now and gets used pretty hard!

I suppose it would be a case of finding a TDV8 from a Rangerover and Disco 6 speed manual

Am I mad??? :D

Other option is a BMW M67 from a 740d etc but I'd like to keep it LR really

I don't know but i think i read somewhere that the modern engines are looking for all sorts of things that the defender may not have. They allegedly are electronically matched to things like the suspension and traction control I believe.

There is a commercially available conversion TDV6 into a P38 but it sounds awfully complicated.

yea, all modern ECUs look for inputs from suspension, steering, wheel speed and lots of other bits but there's ways around all that so not really overly worried about that aspect of it.

Fitting the TDV6 and TDV8 to the Defender should be fairly similar I'd imagine. just a little less space for stuff with the V8. Think a TD5 performance intercooler works for both

Im sure Ive read someone makes an ecu and loom etc that will run the tdv6/8 engine, buts its very expensive.
Maybe some research on the engine itself as Im sure its got its own set of known problems, ie injectors/vgt etc

yea, there's a good few companies that do the ECU flashing so that won't be a stumbling block if my back is to the wall and there is a solution if I can't manage something myself or cheaper.

Trying to decide is the cost of the TDV8 and gearbox worth it over just spending the money on adding more power to the TD5 that I have.
A standard TDV8 would walk all over a tuned TD5 of course and effortlessly so too when it has just so much torque and be nicer to drive.

Other thing too is the fear of eating shafts and diffs for breakfast and dinner but I've never broken one yet with a 200bhp+ TD5 on 33s so maybe my driving style isn't as bad as I think lol

I reckon a Q car defender would be amazing, not loud or brash, just stunningly quick with no effort.
I still think the 4 and 6 pot cummins engines are excellent power plants.
I would guess the v8 gbox will also have its own ecu.

Go for it, get a Simtek Body Logic stand alone ECU - they put some TDV8's into a 300tdi Disco.

Would be a nice engine.

not loud or brash?

That rules out mine so then as it'll still look like this when rebuilt only maybe a few less dents an scratches :D

I think the manual Disco TDV6 6 speed will work fairly ok and mate to the LT230 transfer so that'll rule out electronics for the box although TDV8 auto would be lovely and probably alot kinder to drive-train too rather than a clutch

Thats actually quite tasteful not brash at all.

Have got a solution to the ECU now anyway so that's a big bit out of the way :)

Just have to find a reasonably priced 3.6 or 4.4 now :D

Any chance of sharing that info?
Ive often thought with ecus no matter how clever they are, if you know what wire/signal to tickle you should be able to give the all clear for an engine start.
Are the newer ones 4.4 I thought they were smaller?

Best option is a new ECU. The original can be flashed but it'll just be a nightmare to live with afterwards if you ever need to look for faults with diagnostics as there'll be so many "faults" that'll show up because of all the stuff you've tricked it out of looking for to the point, it'll be like a needle in a haystack trying to find what's wrong if you have a problem with the engine.

NICE 110!!!! DID LRO OR LRM NOT DO THIS conversion?

if I remember right it was a challenge truck and was MENTAL!!

I maybe wrong though. :pop2::scratching_chin:
