Well my thoughts are thus:
That engine delivers high torque figures, so would likely cope with the heavy resistance of water.
It's a reliable 4 stroke engine
It could be connected to a boat gearbox simply due to its shape.
It would be significantly cheaper than an outboard of equivical power, even with additional purchasing of cooling system/gearbox etc

However:
In a car, the engine does not have to run at full power for lengthy periods of time, but in a boat it does.

No I do not have a spare (or even a primary) one to experiment with.

I can't see why this wouldn't work, but it's not done.. So either there's a good reason for that, or people just haven't thought of it yet.

it would be a fine inboard engine - but if you had say 2.5K to spend would you want a ultra reliable dedicated marine engine such as any Volvo Penta, using minimal electronics - or .......

nice project but ........

That is actually an extremely valid point: I'm only well acquainted with outboards.. maybe inboards of the TDV6/8 calibre are around at that price, I shall check, thanks. I just had this thought after drifting (fairly massively) on ebay to Land Rover engines and seeing their extensive availability.

I used to have a couple of AQ130s in mine, I'd bet there 100s of those around second hand - even took one out and used it to run a home made 6Kw genny for a few months

also depends what type of boat it's going into, ickle 1 man inland rocket would need something different to a offshore gin palace etc - old bike engines make fine inboards, light and very responsive

A mate of mine has a 30ft fishing boat powered by a Ford 1.8 Endura td. Very easy to fit, very economical and reliable and plenty of power.

I'd bet you could get one of those for £100 - old Montegos and Meastros had a version of the Perkins diesel fitted, another good cheap source
