I am Thinking of buying a 90. Within my price range are both tdi and td5 engined vehicles what are the pros and cons of each type of engines
Am I better off buying a better conditoned tdi or worse td5.

depend wot your gonna do to be honest, if you gonna get into alot of off road stuff you is safer to move the lectrics stuff from under the drivers seat of the td 5 cause they suceptable to water ingress. The tdis are pretty much a simpler set up although you might wanna look into removing egr valve on 300 tdi as they can be a pain im led to believe. Personally id go for the tdi if you can find a good one.
Is the night club still open in the isle as friends of mine used to own it many years ago?

rather have the better conditioned TDi than a tatty and abused TD5 anyday
 
If you plan on servicing and repairing it yourself go for a tdi. If you don't mind paying a fortune to a garage when it goes wrong try a td5.
 
if you want to enjoy offroading then the a tdi all the way.if you want the landy and all its electrics and computors to do all the work for you and take all the fun out off roading then go for the td5.but be prepared for big garage bills and there always being something wrong with the electronics.
 
I dont know y so many people don`t like the td5??? Yes they have electrics but I only had 1 problem and that was a bad earth. you can buy a small comp to read the ecu for £250. Servicing is straight forward just like any other. it might be just me but I cant fault a td5. Anyway all newer cars have ecu that controls everything no getting away from it!

unless yer goin for a top spec 90 with HDC TC an all that shoit, then that wilty blokes talkin out of his arse cos all the td5 computer doin is makes sure yer engins runnin propper an if it int it lets yer know summats wrong afore it busts, usually :eek: ;)
 
i dont hdc or tc on my 90 and to be honest ive never needed it engine braking works just fine theres nothing i cant do in my 20 year old landy that my mate cant do in his td5 and my landy has never been in the garage as yet unlike my mates td5 thats had loads of ecu trouble and turbo trouble..you cant beat plain old simple engineering.

Had no probs with my 01Td5 90, if you do road miles seriously consider the Td5, more power and quieter. You can actually overtake with a standard Td5.

Off road the anti-stall on the td5 is great when you learn how to use it to your advantage.

Don't listen to all the boll**ks about people can't set off without stalling a Td5 etc. they just can't drive it. Couple of drives and your used to the throttle response and change your driving style to match.

As for general servicing, it's no more difficult to do yourself.

i totally agree wit u!!! everything thats been done to mine ive done meself!! not had to use a garage. and i dont know much about mechanics!!:confused: just use a workshop manual.
 
td5 is harder to pull off in the wrong gear though! i was drivin a mates td5 round his field a while back after a couple of drinks and kept tryin to pull off in 3rd instead of 1st, and it stalled straight away every time, no matter how much throttle i gave it.

my tdi would pull off in 3rd with enough throttle, albeit not very happily!
 
It comes back to what I was saying about learning to use the anti-stall. Try setting off in third high with no throttle, just bringing up the clutch gently and you'll have better results.
 
I have one of each. a 1999 TD5 90 and a 1987 110 that has a 92 200TDI in it and honestly they are both great.

Up unitl recently I have never had a problem with the TD5 but its just getting to that age now where it needs things replacing. It has been in the family from new and in 8 years and 123000 miles the first 67000 of which it towed a 3.5 tonne trailer it has had:

New battery
Propshaft bearings on one end of front prop
New front disks due to being scored while off roading
Rear window replaced
Viscous fan replaced
New alternator
New water pump

All of this apart from the battery has been in the last year so I had 7 years of problem free driving.

The alternator has been the only ECU related problem and that was due to a shortciruit not the alternator which it turned out didn't need replaceing.

So don't be put off by a TD5.
 
TD5's are tops in me book....330,000k and still runnin like a dream...minor probs...oil in injector harness, new oil cooler, new starter, new fuel pressure regulator being the biggies.....the rest just general preventative maintenance.
 
got the guys from the local landy dealer buggin the ****e outta me to take up the new ones [have a fleet of 42 TD5's at the game farm] but told em they better find me more TD5's or im gonna go slitty with the new 70 series toyota
