Hi, 1st post, looked for a search facility before posting as this as probably been asked before but anyway, here goes........

1996 disco 300Tdi, we have a noisy bearing on either the alternator or power steering pulley, Ive recently changed the water pump so that should rule that out, I also don't suspect the belt tensioner bearing as that seems nice and free with no play, and the bearing looks to have plenty of grease in it, its definitely something that is driven by the belt if i take tension off it whilst its running the noise go's away, which do i plumb for as the culprit ? which is the most likely suspect ?.

Also whilst i'm here any recommendations for spares in the north Derby's, north Notts area ? looking for a expansion bottle for the same vehicle.

Thanks in advance, Jon.

Hi,

If you turn both the alternator and steering pump by hand without the belt on, you should feel that one of them is notchy or uneven when turning due to the dirt or wear within the bearing, failing this get a very long screw-driver and very CAREFULLY put on each item and place against your ear whilst the engine is running to provide you with an instant stethoscope - one will near deafen you.

L3on..
