Just to report back on mpg after de-catting my Disco.

First tank - 37.2: mix of town 10%, small country roads 25%, 65% faster A roads and autoroutes 60-70mph;

Second tank - 34: mainly autoroutes & A roads between 60 to 80mph
575 miles on one tankfull

Third tank - have not filled up, just put in 35ltrs, and that took the needle to over half full.

So, in conclusion, I expect to average about 35mpg in my day to day running (not much town work) and around 600 miles to a tank is well achievable.

OK, throw your rocks, but I know these figures are true.

Cheers
Dave

Sorry, i'm new to all this...

I take it you're claiming a de-cat will increase mpg?

Hi lerk, welcome to the forum.

I'm not claiming anything.

Over the last couple of months a number of us have tried a variety of modfications and repairs in an attempt to optimise performance from our respective Discos and this is my latest feedback to the forum, for your collective interest.

What you choose to do with the information is up to you.

Cheers

So what was yer mileage before!?

Will a Defender 300tdi front pipe fit directly on to a Discovery 300Tdi without any modifications??

Also where is the best and cheapest place to buy one??

you forgot to mention the sail you fitted to your roof:D

Ho ho ho, Ho ho ho, Ho ho ho,

Like I said, bring it on. I've posted good mpg figures before - it's all been said, trust me.

That still doesn't negate the fact that these are the mpg figures that I experienced on my last 2 trips.

Like or lump 'em

Hi Simon, yes, the Defender non-catted downpipe is a straight replacement for the existing one

I thought Paddocks were the cheapest but some guy came up with this, which is just sooooooh cheap you have to be starck-staring barmy not to have a go:

Hope that helps

lost your sense of humour big boy? You should get out more.;)

You're absolutely right of course Danny, but when you've been asked on a number of different forums to supply information and then people come along and tell you it's not possible - well, it just gets a bit wearing to be honest.

Sorry, you didn't deserve my comment - BUT YOU OTHERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;) :D :D :D

Cheers, I'm a happy nice person, honest

Dave,

How did you get round the Lambda sensor problem, did you just disconnect and leave it off ?

I am looking to order downpipe today and give it a go as I have a Disco 300tdi Auto acheiving 24mpg at best !

I have done the EGR and all the filters and oils already !

Any help relly appreciated.

Hi Perry, re the cat and any electrical connectios - there aren't any !!

On Land Rover diesel vehicles of this age the cat is really only a filter, it's not in any way comparable to a 3-way closed loop system as used on petrol cars.

There are no issues to doing this mod, my vehicle was Contrôle Technique (MOT) recently and the permitted max level of pollutants is 3 and mine was 0.8 !!!!

When I did mine I found some obvious and some less obvious benefits.

First is she picks up much quicker, so none of that anxiety when you pull out of a side road, second & probably related, the turbo spins up much quicker, third, in general she has more get up a go so I find myself easing off all the time.

Less obvious but now quite apparent is the fact that I enjoy my car much more. We use this as our everyday runabout since selling the Citroen, so she is being used for all sorts of trips, not just the longer stuff.

Yesterday I was out in her, 32° blue sky cruising at 60mph and all is well - you can now drive her by sound as well !! Because you can now hear the turbo working away, it's possible to drive on the sound.

I now have the confidence to overtake things !!!!! This would have never happened before.

Last saturday I towed a big old horse trailer and she made absolutely NOTHING of it.

My advice would be: do it, do it today, buy the Defender downpipe model 2297 from memory, £21.2+vat - you won't regret it.

Cheers
Dave

Ps Any other thoughts/ques, just ask.

Pps Have you cleaned out the intercooler - it's all part of the same mode really - De-EGR, De-cat, new airfilter, washed-out intercooler. All about breathing see.

Just a quick question ?

Is there any particular advantage/s in using the Defender downpipe as opposed to the Discovery one .

Errr Yes - £21.25 versus £60 plus vat.

Enough of a reason???

Cheers
Dave

Ps The difference is that the Disco one has a flexy section which is supposed to reduce noise & vibration, the defender one doesn't because there's already enough noise in a depender !!!!

The Def one in mine works fine, no additional noise that I can detect.

Go on, you know you want to ;) :D :D
