So I’ve been looking for a new car for dad, there are barley any td6 for sale in the Netherlands from the year 2006, there are manny tdv8 for sale from 2007 and later, I’m curious about what engine is more reliable, the engine will probably have more than 200.000km on it. And what about fuel economy?

IMO the TD V8 is less reliable that the TD6, but the gearbox is better. You get the same or more electronic problems.
Fuel economy will not be a lot different,
Good to hear you father is doing well.
My Dutch friend had a TD6, he found plenty for sale in the Netherlands looking recently.

The 3.6 TDV8 is an OK unit if maintained, turbo hoses, Turbos and Headgaskets are starting to rear their heads.
EGR coolers are another.

The 6spd ZF is a great unit, needs a service every 60k

Be wary or a sluggish TDV8 they should pull hard, be wary of low coolant levels..

TD6 is a tad sluggish, engine is better in regards to reliability, but the gearbox is an anchor..

Tell him the close call was a sign. Buy the 5.0 sooner than later ;)
