Frosty morning, went to start her, engine turned over and over and eventually fired. This is not the firstime this has happened, seems to be the colder the morning the worse the problem is.It also seems to 'chug' on tick-over,almost as though it wants to stall.I dont know a great deal about the TD5 but is there a cold start relay or something, feels like it needs a choke? i have changed the following trying to locate the problem:
Glow plugs (all working)
MAF meter
All filters
Nanocom checked and showed NO ROAD SPEED AVAILABLE??????
Hopefully one of you knowledgable chaps can give me an idea as it is starting to rattle my faith in the green oval(that or i rip out the td5 and chuck in a 300 tdi:( )

Deisels dont have chokes.
The TD5 ECU checks the ambient air temp and engine coolant temp and adjusts the injection duration accordingly. We're only talking microseconds but it does make a difference.
Once its warmed up does it run OK?
Plenty of power?
Have you done a compression test?
Checked for leaking injector seals? Sometimes can be heard as a ticking noise that may disappear when warm.

Yeah i know diesels dont have chokes,it just feels like a petrol does when you run it without choke. But when it does warm up it runs and starts fine.I have been told it could be injector washers but this is starting to get me down as i seem to be throwing endless amounts of wonga at it.i changed the battery after the last time and it seemed to improve until this morning(sharp frost down this way)Thanks for the reply though.

Ive got a 300tdi which was starting a bit sluggish but have fitted an 096 varta battery with 680cca and now it is starting first click every time even on these cold mornings. check the power output of your battery maybe a better battery might help.

It sounds like a fuel problem rather than a glow plug issue. It is possible you are losing fuel pressure via the injector washers or seals.

Check the oil level to see if it above what it should be. Also smell and feel the oil to see if there are any signs or diesel in it. If there is then it is highly possible the washers or O rings need replacing.

Or worst case scenario your head is cracked like mine was.
