Hi all,
I new here so be gentle please :D

I've got a Td5 110 done around 87k now. Have any of you lot heard of an issue where, on first start up, could've been sat for the day or a few, glow plug light out, starts literally on the button (so far) every time, then, if I bring the revs up slowly they get to around est 1500-2000rpm, it spews thick white smoke out for about 5 seconds or so, struggles to rev through, like it miss fires, then clears and runs perfectly?

I've learnt to let it just wake up for a bit now and it seems fine.

Thought I'd spread the love and ask about. Sure there are a few peeps that'll be nice enough to help out. (hope is a wonderful thing)

Added note, NOT remapped, NO egr, decat or silencer delete, air filters different BUT it did it with the old std one. it's, almost as stock as stock can be...for now.

Big thanks in advance and apologies for the long message, tricky to explain as relatively complex.

Normally one of three:

Condensation in exhaust (would not affect performance)
MAF sensor (gets my vote!) very easy to change and cheap.
Head Gasket / Cracked head, so check your coolant lid for cream etc

if you have a voltmeter see here :

A decent fuel filter may help too if you haven’t tried it already, I member on here recently had a similar issue, the cam timing was a fanny hair out

When the TD5 starts it takes a few seconds to reach full power. Mine does this and a few other people have remarked on it too. I always assumed it was something to do with it being programmed that way so as not to stress the engine before the oil had got round. The injector on no.5 cylinder doesn't open at first either, which is another aspect of the sense that it is in limp mode for the first few seconds.

I had a very smoky and uneven start after a clutch change a little while ago and it turned out that I'd forgotten to screw the crank position sensor fully home and it was dirty anyway. I cleaned it and its seat, and put it back in and did its bolt up tight and it was much better. They're also smokier when the air filter is dirty - I think they may be running a little rich - so a clean air filter prior to the MOT is a good idea.

Great stuff, Thanks for the feed back you lot! gives me plenty to go on, think i'll start cheap and finish strong.
I've bunged a new Fuel filter on because I knew it hadn't been done for a while and I was experiencing water in fuel light, that's another story. Stuck a new air filter in too, cleaned the MAP sensor and cleaned out the EGR valve.
I know the history of the machine and know that over the last 10 or so years it's been used very little, like 200 miles a year if that but want to keep on top of it all really.
All info great fully received though and MAF info from KISSMYAURA also much appreciated, I've had it off and checked it physically, felt pretty grimy so cleaned it for now, but will get more involved when I get space and time, tricky to work on it at home but will make some time in the next week or so and let you know how I get on!

Not had this on my Defender, but had exactly the same thing on my Transit tdci and it was faulty glow plugs.
All four were shot. The TD5 starts fine without glow plugs unless it’s very cold.
