I HAVE A 2001 TD5 WITH 16" WHEELS THAT I DONT LIKE VERY MUCH IF I FIT 17" WHEELS WILL THIS UPSET THE GEARING OR ANYTHING ELSE ?

Because tyres have various sidewall depths. This can alter the diameter of the wheel/tyre which will alter the number of turns the wheel/tyre has to rotate to cover a fixed distance. It can also give inaccurate speedo readings.

I know all that, so if the overall height of the wheel and tyres is the same as the standard set up the wheel size can be 17 or 18 you just use a lower profile tyre ? but if that is the case how can the later TD5s run 18 wheels which dont seem to use a lower profile tyre ?

Did not know that later TD5's ran 18" wheels , if they did then either the profile of the tyre was smaller to allow for it / or the gearing was changed / the speedo was recalibrated.
Or if it ran 18" wheels and the same profile tyres but nothing was changed then speedo misread and it was more of a struggle pulling away from standstill.

I am so bored, I cannot confirm or deny the following calculations are correct. or even if such a 17 inch tyre exists.

I use both 16 and 18 inch rims; the 18's have 255/55R18 normal temperature compound (summer) tyres and the 16's have the 235/70R16 winter compound tyres.
As far as gear ratios are concerned there is no discernable difference, so the speedo is reading more or less correct (within normal operating parameters). There is a noticeable difference in the handling characteristics of the vehicle between the two sizes, the 16's feel a bit softer, probably due to the deeper sidewall.
As far as I am aware, those are the only two rim sizes which can be fitted to a Disco 2, for no other reason than the layout of the wheel studs. The wheels from a P38 can fit too.
You are going to struggle to find a set of 17 inch rims with the correct stud layout, if they even exist.

Yeah, of course there are 17 inch rims, plenty of them too, but ....
If you read what I wrote again you'll see that I was refering to 17 inch rims which will match the stud pattern for the Disco 2. Now they are like rocking horse s**t.
