Hi everyone,

First post and a question from a long term lurker :)

My 2003 TD5 wagon makes a huge bang whenever I hit a reasonable size bump/pothole in the road, it sounds like the entire back end of the body is lifting and dropping back down, I don't think it's suspension related and the spare wheel carrier is new and the spare wheel bolted on tightly.

Any ideas on where to start looking ?

Thanks everyone :)

Hi there

Really hard to advise from a description. Has this just started or has it always done it?

Am presuming that it is quiet (well as quiet as a Landy ever is :D) in normal driving - i.e. no clonks or bangs when pulling away, changing gear, breaking etc.

Not being daft (honest) - check the wheel nuts are tight. Assuming yes, lift each wheel and check for bearing movement (grab the wheel and move up and down/back and forth - it shouldn't move)

Hard with a Landy, but see if any clonks from trying to bounce each corner. Grab hold of the rear springs and see if they move - they probably won't.

Am wondering if just the aluminium wheel panels or tub floor are moving/vibrating - the panels can/do flex and reverb

Not sure if yours should have rubber bump stops on the axle (but wouldn't expect a pot hole to cause enough movement for anything to come anywhere close to contacting them) - but worth checking they are there

Will let you know if anything else occurs to me, but am sure someone cleverer than me will be along soon:D:D

If it bangs when taking up the clutch then the a frame ball joint it is. Mine was the same as yours and banged when on the clutch, silent and ever now, allong with the shock that is no longer snapped in half.
