Im used to the temperature gauge sitting bang smack in the middle of the dial once the engine is up to temperature, however recently its only been climbing to just above the bottom and staying there, even after a very long journey in fairly warm weather, and with the air con running basically the whole time.

I did neglect the top up the coolant for a while, but its got plenty again now.

Ideas for what to check?
 
Did you bleed it correctly?
Get it on diagnotic and see what the real temp reading is.

I didn't think it was so low that bleeding might be necessary, but i guess its something to have a go at.
Unfortunately I dont have access to a nanocom.
 
I dont think that nanocom can help as it will show the output of the ECT sensor which is managing the gauge too so if you dont have a laser thermometer to read the head's temp while the gauge is low you better replace the sensor cos it's not expensive.... and off course bleed the system well cos if it's air not coolant around the sensor it will read low at normal engine temp
 
On a follow up / side note.

This week, I also had a low temp gauge, seemed to be sitting at the the normal step before then coolant temp goes above 82C. Put it on nanocom. was reading 79C.
Replaced the sender this morning, now nanocom reads 90C, but gauge still sitting low? Have a new thermostat to fit just in case.
The Speedo also has starting acting up, for a few miles each momring it will mis read , only going up to 15~20MPH and then suddenly after a while it will jump up to the correct reading and then be OK.
Sadly , the small spider that had been living in my dash between the perspex and the dials has died.

re the temp reading, in the old days, if you were low on coolant, and the temp sensor was sitting in air instead of in coolant, you'd get a low reading.
 
But it is not low on coolant...

Your's might not be but you yourself asked OP in #2 if he had bled it properly and he never came back about it other than to say it is something to try! If he hasn't bled it then he could still be low on coolant and the air may be around his temp sensor. Just a thought.

I'm affraid that your instrument pack is on the way out cos as long as you get above 70*C ECT reading with nanocom the gauge should stay at the middle cos it's working on the ECT input and it was not too well conceived as to stay at the middle between 70 - 119*C... corroborated with the speedo misbehaviour i'd say that the IP is suspect

Was my prognosis, but then today in the sunlight I saw all the spiders webs across the inside of the dash. So I will pull it out and give it a go over with an airline to see if it solves the problem, if not then a new dash may be required.

Well, all is good, except for Harry the spider, as he is dead.

Took the Instrument panel out, cover off, gave the instruments a clean, and hey presto now the temp gauge works OK.
