I have an 51 TD5 with about 77k on the clock.

In the last few days, I've begun to get a whine from (I think) the transmission.

It comes in in 3rd/4th/5th gear between 30 and 70mph.

It's only there when I have my foot on the gas. On overrun or foot-off-the-gas, it disappears.

It increases in frequency/pitch as the speed rises.

It seems to come fom over my right shoulder- but I could be fooled by this as I'm hard of hearing in my left ear.

It's non-existent with the clutch depressed and 'coasting'

Anyone any ideas please ?

hi m8, first of have u checked the oil levels in the gbox and transfer box?if they are ok access to a four poster ramp so u can drive it with wheels of the ground to listen while under the car will locate where the noise is coming from.transfer boxes are usually ok,so if the gear box could be baulk rings or a bearing.

Long time with this Whine but................ Finally sorted it out (Hooray !!)

A pin from the Pinion ( as in Crown wheel and pinion) had worked loose and was cirvulating with the rotation of the propshaft generally knackering the whole diff ! Lots of 'silver metal' in the oil from the back axle when dropped.

Solution - Replacement Diff from a breaker £80. Fitting £100. Result - All quiet on the the Western Front . I can hear the radion again !!

Bliss !!

PS I stll have a whine from the passenger seat (but she now has her own car- so that's cured)
