Morning all, I have what I believe to be a rattling timing chain on my TD5 Defender. Its a 2002 110 td5 with 105k on it.

Have just rung my local Landrover specialists (MJ Fews) and they tell me they have never replaced one !

I've had one quote for £850 from an unknown local garage and wanted to see what people thought of that as a guide price. I wont be giving my Landy over to any garage I haven't checked out before hand though.

Any thoughts on this price or anyone in the Gloucestershire area you would recommend please?

Are you sure it's the timing chain that's rattling?
The harmonic damper can rattle if worn, it's a much more common fault and is located on the crankshaft pulley at the front of the engine.

I don't know without looking closer, but that would be a result. I appreciate your response and will let you know when I look into it further.

Just checked the Damper and looks to be tight, no movement in it even with applying pressure and leverage to it.

So the noise is definitely coming from one of these two. I know the top smaller one Is the roller idler. Can’t find what the bigger one is called. Sorry if it’s a dumb ass question!

Used a stethoscope in the area to locate the noise.

The one with three bolts on is the power steering pump. These can fail - mine did. How does the steering feel? Is it stiffer than usual? There's a spring loaded jockey wheel over on the other side of the engine which you can lever back so as to get the fan belt off, so as to be able to give the pulleys a wobble and see if their bearings are getting loose, which might explain the noise. The reason the belt is so convoluted round that area is that on some models there's an air conditioning unit mounted on that grey casting with the four bolt holes in it, which has a pulley for the belt to go round.
 
Oh, and I should mention that the timing chain on the TD5 is generally believed to be a fairly long lived item. Not like the rubber belt on earlier engines that is supposed to be replaced every 60,000 miles.

Thanks for replying. The steering feels fine and there appears to be no noticeable difference play in any of the pulleys. It’s going in the garage tomorrow so I’ll let you know what they diagnose.
