Hi guys I bought a Td5 15p about a month ago with starting problems. Sometimes it takes a few cranks to get going but then other times it will fire straight up. It's got a new but cheap fuel pump on it. New genuine fuel filter housing replaced last night with air bleed valve fitted. Injector seals were done just over a year ago. Fuel pressure regulator is not leaking and doesn't look that old either. Any ideas as to what this could be. I was driving the other day turned it off for 1-2mins then really struggled to start. Once it's running its fine and doesn't miss a beat but does feel like power is being held back.

Hi Ryan,

Just a couple of things was the airbleed valve and the non return valve in the correct positions?

Were the injector washers and O rings genuine? Or Cheapies?

Does the pump whine?

Have you checked fuel pressure at the FPR?

Have you had ot on diagnostics to see if any faults are logged?

Also just for fun, is this a disco or defender?

Sent from the sunny fields of The Bakewell Bash!

Cheers

Also, if you look at my post inthe disco section about my TD5 you will find all manner of suggestions on things to look for.

Mine now starts and runs fine , but I will also in the future be changing the injector washers and o rings for a genuine set plus I may look at checking the gauze filter in the FPR. When I next check the fuel pressure.

Cheers

Hi I'm new to this site and don't know how to do that

Check the crank position sensor they can cause all sorts of starting problems
I will put a new one in and try that thanks. Some days it starts fine other days it literally only just fires and it's worse after a drive then left for a little while

Non return valve was in the wrong place when I received it, it wouldn't start at all until I changed it. (Got correct place off here). I bought a genuine fuel filter housing as I've read they can crack letting air in. Injector seals I'm not sure what brand they were.
Pump was replaced with second hand but genuine VDO pump and yes it does while a tiny amount but old one was very loud and hardly hear this one. I have a diagnostic computer and no faults coming up for this problem.
I haven't checked fuel pressure at FPR as I don't know how to do that but FPR replacement kit was my next step.
Sorry it's a discovery 2002 Td5 15p lump

Hi if your handy with mechanics and feel confident I would recommend changing the seals and washers again genuine parts but anneal them

My cousin had the same happen to his and it was the seals and washers that cured it...

Make sure you release both fuel lines at the regulator though, I believe you can hurt the engine viscously if you don't remove all the fuel from the head before hand

Cheers

Okay thanks for the advice. I've been told it may not be the injector seals as the oil level is not rising and doesn't smell. I was out in it all day yesterday it really struggled to start twice took a good minute to fire and even then was gradually turning over sounding like fuel starvation but then the whole day of laning hours of driving and turning off started fine everytime from then on. Strainge !

there is only one oring on the injector at the top this stops fuel contamination entering the oil
the other O ring is actually a combustion washer ..... if one in 5 combustion washers are leaking this causes the head to drain or combustion gasses entering the fuel system depending on failure also depends on the how good the cleaning and install was from the last
you may find the combustion washer is seeling perfect once the engine has warmed up

Change injector seals honestly I'm pretty sure this will be the problem other than the injectors themselves

Good luck

Okay thanks I will stop that then lol. I turned the ignition on this morning and I could hear the pump whining quite loud louder than the other 3 td5's my mates have and I could hear a sloshing sound like there's air in there or something. It's like fuel runs back to the tank or something as soon as it running it's fine and doesn't miss a beat but it when I go to restart after 10mins or so. Would that still be injectors?

Which was the correct and wrong place?

It was in the back left closed to the chassis so I put it in the back right closed to wheel. (Back) as in as you look at the filter housing from the wheel arch is left (back of car)

You say the "non return valve", was this white with a filter inside it,( this is the air bleed valve) or was it black with an orange rubber duckbill valve on it ?

Cheers
