Just had to replace the rear o/s central locking unit, as part of this you need to remove the Window Frame. My 2000 TD5 is in fairly good condition with just a couple of spots of surface rust that i have treated.

When I took the window frame out I was amazed to see that the piece of metal that holds the rear quarter light in was virtually rusted through (This is at the bottom of the window and down inside the door).

Gave it a good rust treatment, and then hamerited., hopefully this will slow down the decay. Will need to check the n/s next weekend.

Looking at the design I guess the first you would know of the failure would be the quarter light glass dropping down inside the door.

Mines got rust at these points aswell. ( which I,d like to sort out ).

What sort of a job is it to strip the door down to treat this rust ?.

Cheers
Del.

Reasonably easy - Remove Door Card (2 screws in pull handle, one in door opener) loads of the clips to hold the card on and Speaker wires.

Remove the inner door / window seal – a line of small clips underneath – I just pushed these up with a screw driver.
Remove the outer door / window seal – two clips on the inside of the door, I just pushed these up with a screw driver, and then used a bit of force on the seal.

Lower the window so the screws that hold the window lift mechanism line up with the holes in the door (Just loosen these). Now the hard part you need to slide the mechanism off the window the side near the door lock was easy, the only way I could get the side near the hinges off was to cut the speaker protector on the door and put my hand up inside that hole.

Tape the Window to the top of the frame.

Remove the six screws that hold the window frame on (Two by hinges, two by lock and two on the Qtr light bar (one top one bottom)) and then remove the frame + glass.

Having done this once I suppose it would take about twenty mins to do, it also helps to have a helper to move the window around a bit to access screws etc.

Remember to re-tape all the internal polythene bakup

Hope this helps.
