Hi all, Ive had a nasty few months with my td5 discovery, from fuel problems to head gaskets and pretty much everything in between.
So I've just done the H.G for the third time (because of a very slightly warped head). Now until I can afford a new head I'm stuck trying to nurse this one. I'm pretty sure some of you will be sat there cringing now but the last time I did the H.G I used some gasket sealer. Worked a treat for the first couple days, then I parked it at work for half an hour ish whilst I filled my trailer with logs, went to fire it up and it wouldn't crank. My first thoughts was a flat battery, so I called my dad and got it dragged home. Now this is where it gets interesting... I tried a couple times to bump start it on the way home and it wouldn't turn over! No matter what gear I was in, no matter how fast we were going, it wouldn't turn. Then I got the horrible smell of clutch. Sadly it was mine and not my dads. So the engine is either siezed or something's seriously wrong somewhere- which I've probably made worse by trying to bump it!

The engine was running perfect before I switched it off, and I've covered well over 100 miles since I did the headgasket.

I rang a few local mechanics that know a thing or two about td5's and they all said either seized engine, timing problem or a nackered piston etc. I then rang Michael at Stonelake in Halifax and he told me to pull each injector out and see if it'll crank then. Nothing. Will rotate perfectly freely anti clockwise, but won't spin at all clockwise.

I'm at my wits end with this motor but I'm not giving up yet. If I can't sort this it'll be a new engine, but that's my last resort. It's had so much money thrown at it, that's my last hope. Any ideas and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

As the mechanics have said, seized, timing belt or somehow mechanically/hydraulic locked.

First thing I would do is check all fluid levels etc. If their is no water or low oil it might give you clues. Ditto brass or metal in the oil.
My gut feeling is the head will have to come off again. Trying to bump it and smelling the clutch is really not good news something is really solid.

My guess would be the timing is out and it's piston/valve. Can you turn it far enough the other way to line the belt markings back up

just to check, do you mean liquid gasket with the head gasket or like stop leak?

sounds like your best bet is another engine they did seem to fetch around 1000 to 1500 for decent one, it could easily hydrauliced and now has a bent rod since you tried to tow it off, gasket sealer wont stand the temps and pressure occurring in the cylinder ,its worse than fitting dry which is how they should be

That would be my guess as well, sealant on a head gasket is really not a good idea, water in cylinder and hydro locked with something seriously bent trying to bump it.

Not great news I know :(

My guess is the same. Cylinder filled with water due to head gasket failure and then locked up.
Strange that it will rotate anticlockwise but not clockwise.

According to posts on FB it turned out to be a collapsed bearing on the ACE pulley.

Sounds unlikely but certainly a lot less expensive than a dead lump

Well after a night in the workshop i finally found the problem, to my relief! Turns out the ace pulley has shat it's bearing out and completely seized solid! Luckily the head didn't come off but after reading all these comments I'm thinking I'll need a new head sooner than I thought

To temporarily sort the problem I put the air con pump back on for the time being, then used the pulley I had for that in the place of the ace pulley... Then used the original belt. It'll function as normal now and the engine runs sweet!

So all sorted for now thanks guys!
Jack
