just put the discovery 10p engine in my 99 defender had to change power steering pump to fit and few other bits but when I try and start it it just went one click fuel pump everything worked perfectly radio lights etc except it wouldn’t turn over found it to be the solenoid had disconnected itself put it back on it was turning over fine but no fuel pump agh none of the gauges worked either nor the radio but when I pull solenoid fuel pump works but radio and gauges don’t I connected live wire on the ignition barrel to the empty blade first time and it turned over on the first click could this have done anything?

swap over a few relays I highly doubt that all relays to fail at once ..also check all earths and power connections
It’s cranking over but it’s like it’s not getting fuel plenty of smoke and diesel leaking from the regulator and hissing noise from the regulator fuel pump does stop after 5 miniutes but there’s no difference to the engine trying to start

Have you checked the actual fuel quantity and pressure at the fuel regulator from the pump?

Cheers

I put fresh diesel in it and whilst I cranked it my mate put the diesel pipe in a bottle and it was in good nick but haven’t tested the pressure

How much output did you get when you cranked it, it could the LP side of the pump running.

No idea I was just cranking will ask mate tomorrow I’ve been pressing throttle to try and purge with no luck don’t want to buy new parts without knowing what’s actually wrong the engine ran when it came from the disco but the defender had been sitting for four years before this

try loosening the fuel line at the front of the cylinder head then prime to make sure fuel is actually going into the head and not just bypassing in side the regulator it could be possible the small oring that sits inside the head had falling off when changing the regulator this may create the regulator to by pass straight to the return

if you can hear it hissing could be air in the system still or its pulling in air from somewhere ..also fuel pressure gauge would be good to make sure the correct rating of regulator is installed I have experienced low pressure issues on some cheep regulators sold on ebay and they bypass sooner ...the air in the system is just going around around and around regardless how good the air bleed valve is

I also have to ask does the engine start on spray into the air intake

if the defender has been sitting for years make sure the fuel system is clean and free of water ....start at the fuel filter drain into a clean bowl and let it settle
drain fuel tank and clean take not of water in the fuel system from condensation also check fuel cap by cracking it off the fuel tank could possibly be in a vacuum

Fuel is coming from the pipe into the cylinder head no idea what pressure though and runs on easy start and fuel is clean and have opened cap to put diesel in

you need to make sure that fuel is going into the head and not just the pipe leading to the head ..the front of the head is the return
